Herman Hascal Giles Herman Hascal Giles, a retired newspaper executive and author, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born July 30, 1922, at Big Stone Gap, Va., the son of the late H.O. Giles and Clara Rose Giles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers; and four sisters. He worked at Bristol Newspaper for more than 30 years in various editorial positions. At the time of his retirement in 1980, he was president and publisher of the Bristol Herald Courier. He was a former president of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, former chairman of the Bristol Tennessee Industrial Development Committee, a former member of the Board of Directors of the Dominion National Bank (now Wachovia) and the Bristol United Way. Under the name Hascal Giles, he was author of 80 magazine stories and five novels, mostly in the Western genre. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ruth Miller Giles; two daughters, Kay Hover and Amanda McGrady, both of Bristol; one son, Eric Giles of Florence, Ala.; four granddaughters, Glynnis Hover of San Antonio, Stacey Williamson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Haley Stephens and Emily Stephens, both of Bristol; one grandson, Clay Giles of Bristol; and six great-grandchildren. The graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, in Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Howard C. Taylor officiating. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home.
