J.C. Shanks Jr. KINGSPORT, Tenn. J.C. Shanks Jr. went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, after a long illness with his family at his bedside at home. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. J.C. was born Feb. 18, 1928, in Hawkins County, the son of J.C. Shanks Sr. and Maude Presley Shanks. He lived in Hawkins County until 1950 when he moved to Kingsport. J.C. retired from Meade Paper after 42 years of service in 1990. He served in the U.S. Army as a Radio Telephone Operator (RTO), with the 3rd Army, 3rd chemical motor Battalion from 1951-1953. J.C. loved to work outside and raise cattle on his farm in Hawkins County. He was a member of the Moose Lodge for many years. J.C. attended Cave Springs Baptist Church in Rogersville in his early years, and First Baptist Church of Kingsport in his later years. J.C. was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Maude Shanks; brothers, Emerson Shanks, Earl Shanks, Ben Shanks; sister, Marjorie McLendon; sisters-in-law, Willie Mae Shanks and Alma Shanks. J.C. is survived by his wife of 50 years, Arlene Franklin Shanks; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Suzy Shanks of Church Hill, James (Jimmy) Shanks of Kingsport, Richard (Randy) and Kristine Shanks of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Danielle Shanks of Hickory, N.C., James E. Shanks and friend Brittany Barr of Kingsport, Joshua Shanks and fiance' Sherri Hotaling of Kingsport, Megan Shanks of Church Hill, Jacob Shanks of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Katherine Shanks of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; great granddaughter, Emma Shanks of Kingsport; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda and Blake Thomas of Marietta, Ga., Dottie Gammon and Ralph Kellett of Smyrna, Ga.; along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. Music will be provided by Susan Hoover. An entombment service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 at Oak Hill Mausoleum with Rev. Mitch Whisnant officiating. Pallbearers will be sons, grandsons, and granddaughter. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Randy McLaughlin and staff, Dr. Edain McElroy and staff, Hematology Oncology, Care Central and Amedysis for their excellent care and concern for J.C.
