John Drew Godsey John D. Godsey, Th.D, 88, professor emeritus of Wesley Theological Seminary and a renowned scholar of German theologian and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer, died Oct. 12, at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Md. He died of cardiac arrest. Born in Bristol on Oct. 10, 1922, Dr. Godsey was the son of William Clinton and Mary Lynn Corns Godsey. He attended Tennessee High School 1936-38 and then spent the last two years at the McCallie School in Chattanooga, graduating in 1940. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and received his B.S. degree in 1947, following a stint as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1943-46. Dr. Godsey earned a B.D. degree magna cum laude in 1953 from Drew University Theological School, during which time he was awarded both the Morrow Memorial Scholarship and the Delaplaine McDaniel Fellowship. He earned his doctorate in theology insigni cum laude in 1960 from the University of Basel, Switzerland, where he was a prot‚g‚ of Swiss theologian Karl Barth, one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Dr. Godsey's published dissertation, The Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, was the first comprehensive study of Bonhoeffer in any language. He was recognized throughout the theological world as an expert on Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran pastor and member of the German resistance who was executed near the end of World War II for his role in the failed plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Dr. Godsey was professor of systematic theology at Drew University Theological School in New Jersey from 1956-1968. In 1964, he was awarded a Fulbright Research Scholarship and spent a sabbatical year at the University of Goettingen, Germany. He moved to Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. in 1968, where he taught systematic theology and served as associate dean for three years. He continued to teach until retirement in 1988. He returned in 1990 to teach an additional three years, and served briefly as acting dean of the Seminary. In 1995, Dr. Godsey received Drew University Theological School's Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Godsey authored and co-authored numerous books and other scholarly works, including Ethical Responsibility: Bonhoeffer's Legacy to the Churches, and was a founding member of the International Bonhoeffer Society, English Language Section; a past president of the American Theological Society; and active in the American Academy of Religion, the Biblical Theologians and the Karl Barth Society of North America. During his time growing up, Dr. Godsey's family attended State Street Methodist Church, and he was a long-time member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Maryland, where he often preached and lectured. He was preceded in death in 1993 by Emalee Caldwell Godsey, his wife of 50 years; as well as brothers, William Clinton Godsey Jr. and Edwin Shirley Godsey. His wife of 15 years, Cozette Barker Godsey, died Oct. 13. He is survived by his children Emalee Godsey Murphy, of Kensington, Md., John Drew Godsey Jr., of Bradenton, Fla., Suzanne Godsey Douglas, of Asheville, N.C., Gretchen Godsey Brownley, of Westminster, Md.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Helen Godsey Overbay, of Kingsport, Tenn., and Eloise Godsey Horner, of Bristol Virginia; and stepchildren, James A. We were saddened to learn of the passing of an exceptional human being. He was a friend and neighbor to my husband's family for many years. And at our request, he performed our wedding ceremony - which was apparently a first for him. Our memories of the service and him will always be special for us. May your memories of him and the person he was comfort you now and forever.

Dr. Godsey was so kind to my children when we lived on Wesley's campus.

Professor Godsey served as a pastor/theologian to me and many classmates at Drew in the l960s...he touched us by reading Bonhoeffer's Letters from Prison & holocaust survivors letters, he shared his deep faith at memorial services for Drew students who died accidental deaths, shared Karl Barth jokes in class, stayed connected while he taught at Wesley, truly a grace-filled Southern gentleman and 'earthen vessel' of the Drew legacy. He validated a 'worldly theology' of my campus ministry, and therefore will remain in my affection and gratitude forever. Franz Hildebrandt and Dietrich Bonhoeffer are reunited with their dearest friend. Max Case, Carmel, IN USA

John Godsey was my teacher, my friend, and pedecessor at Drew. When I joined the faculty in 1969, I took over his courses on Bonhoeffer and Friedrich Schleiermacher, and added Holocaust Studies. With Carl Michalson and Franz Hildebrand, Bonhoeffer's close friend, John represented the Golden Age of theology at Drew.

Dr. Godsey's dignity and integrity (not to mention his intellectual achievements) made a profound impression on me as a Drew Ph.D. candidate. During Drew's time of turbulence during the mid and late '60s, after the tragic loss of my first dissertation director Carl Michalson and two others who moved on to quieter pastures, he guided me steadily and wisely to that project's completion. I will always remember him with gratitude and admiration.

A Drew graduate in 1964, John Godsey taught me systematic theology (as a historian in college, I never knew what all that implied) taking us through Tillich's 2 volumes, then the Bonhoeffer and Barth courses (and KB came to Princeton once during those years and some of us got to go down to see his eminence). What a special, special man John was--the best of Methodism, of Drew, of his generation. We were certainly blessed to know him, have him as a teacher and be graced by his distinctive loving spirit. As a faculty member at Drew after John Godsey had left, I lived with the strong and continuing memories of his teaching and leadership. I very much appreciated the gracious way in which he affirmed and supported the school's efforts to rebuild.

John Godsey was my teacher in Systematic Theology and Karl Barth's Theology at Drew University and one of the inspirations for my attending the University of Basel. He was a messenger of God to me. Thank you, John.

I am so sad to hear about the death of Dr. Godsey. He was so supportive of me during the time in which I worked and attended Wesley Seminary. He also supported me during my pastoral internship at Bethesda UMC for two years. We connected right away when I found out he was from Bristol, and I was from Abingdon (20 minutes away). I will always treasure those days and remember what a great mentor he was. I will be praying for your family.

I looked up the name of John D. Godsey, because he is the author of a book I am reading (an old, old copy), Preface to Bonhoeffer, I wanted to write Dr. Godsey to tell him how much I valued his writing (Dr. Godsey's writing). And now I won't have the chance, and I feel sad. I missed him by just a few days. My condolences to Dr. Godsey's family. Frances Robinson, ABQ, NM

A kind and courteous gentleman, and a fierce scholar. I will never forget his seminar on Bonhoeffer and Barth at Wesley. To be in the presence of history, faith, and intellect, all graciously shared. Thanks be to God for this life.
