One of Lorraine's runs was up from the Temple Hill Cemetary to the top of Buzzard Roost. She would pass by my Mother's, Lora Couch, home. She always had time to stop and give Mom a smile and some pleasant and caring remarks. Thank you Lorraine you can now talk to Mom in Heaven. Leo Jessee

Dr. Turner was such a wonderful person. She was always there whenever I needed something while I worked for the local paper. I'll always cherish the wedding gift that she sent. May God bless her family and friends.

Lorraine's service and dedication to the students, staff, and and faculty has always been and will continue to be such an inspiration. She worked tirelessly to improve the quality of education for the students of our county. As a teacher, I never felt that thank-you was enough to say. Her humbleness of heart, dedication to service, and willingness to help served as model for me to follow. My heart aches for the family yet I rejoice that I was both priviledged and blessed to have worked with and for such a wonderful person. Just knowing her was a blessing. Leisa Rainbolt (Lebanon)

To the Turner Family
My Prayers and Thoughts are with the entire family during this time of great grief. Our God is watching over Lorraine now! I did not know Lorraine as an educator but it looks like she was well respected; a fellow Classmate of '68. Lorraine will be missed.

I am so sorry to read of Lorraine's passing. She was such a wonderful person. I remember when I transferred to Castlewood from St Paul, she was one of the first people to befriend me. She had a heart of gold and always looked out for everyone else. I had the priviledge of seeing Lorraine and working with her with Special Olympics in Bristol. Watching her help those precious children was a blessing. She was one of a kind and may her spirit be with us always and keep the rest of us uplifted. Russell County has lost the best. God bless and comfort you during this time and may her memories become treasures for all of us.

Ike and Other Family Members,
My thoughts and prayers are being sent your way during this time and in weeks to come. Lorraine was a dynamic individual who mastered "multi-tasking" before it became vogue. She was always empowering her colleagues through words and actions, and her commitment to a quality education for all children was ever present in her daily schedule. Russell County and Virginia have lost an exemplary leader, a devoted educator, a compassionate individual, and a woman who left her footprints for the test of time. It's an honor to call her a colleague and a friend. Gabie Frazier (Richmond, VA)
P.S. I know Lorraine is getting everyone organized in Heaven!!

Thank you, Mrs. Turner, for your dedication to our schools, and most importantly, to the children of Russell County. You were a soldier and an ambassador for God and for our children, and it is now time to lay your armour down and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You will forever be in our hearts and your imprint will remain a permanent, integral part of the Russell County School system. Rest in peace. Thank you for your years of service.

Leslie was lucky to have Lorriane as a teacher for the first semester of her seventh grade in school. She was an inspiration to Leslie as I am sure she was too many other students in the Russell County School System. The lost to the school system will be great however I know your lost is greater. May God comfort you and Lorraine’s family at this time. It is times like these that God hides us in the cleft of his hand as the world continues around us.

To The Turner/Cochran Family
I have known Lorraine Turner since I was seven years old. She was the student teacher in my first grade class. I remember that she and Ike helped out with a first grade play or pageant or some program that our first grade class was putting on and as little kids, we just thought it was so funny that she and Ike were boyfriend and girlfriend. We were running around giggling and laughing at them. A few years later Lorraine became my first basketball coach at Dante Elementary. She would make us do all kinds of drills. But all we wanted to do was play but she said that we had to learn the fundamentals of the game. She was a pretty disciplined coach.
It was a few years later that I came to know her as more than just my teacher and my coach. Lorraine and I became teammates on a Ladies slow pitch softball team known as the "Daredevils". This was an awesome softball team. We would travel all over the place just about every weekend playing softball. On several occasions, I rode to the games with Lorraine. It was during these times that she would talk to me about education. She would tell me that I had to finish high school and that I needed to work hard and for me not to just go through the motions of going to class but go and try to understand everything that I was being taught that knowledge was the key. I was never a great student. A "C" student at best, but she always said work as hard as you can. I have never forgotten her words of encouragement. Lorranie was never a person who needed to be center stage.Never wanted to be the center of importance. She always made everybody else feel important. She always made me , a thirteen year old black kid, feel like the center of importance. She commanded great respect not because she had a Doctorate but because she gave great respect. Today I hold a Masters Degree in Counselor Education and I am the Guidance Coordinator at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Virginia and I have a nineteen year old daughter who is a sophomore at Radford University and I know that Lorraine played a part in that success. To her family I wish to tell you that I will mourn her passing from this life to the after life, but I will take with me her spirit and a quote which I recently read that I believe sums up better than I can the messages that she tried to teach me as a young girl and that is " Dreams Come True When Opportunity and Preparation Meet". Her spirit and her messages I'll take with me through the remainder of my journey through this life.
So long my teacher;my coach;my teammate and my friend.
My Deepest Sympathy to the family

To Ike & the entire Cochran/Turner family:
I was just made aware of Lorraine's unexpected death, & I am shaken. She was larger than life, the person who was stronger, smarter, kinder, more loving than the rest of us. An athlete...I remember being awed by Lorraine... out at the crack of dawn running 10 miles before work...long before running was in vogue.
I always thought we would meet again someday & have a good long visit. How can it be that she is gone? My heart breaks for you, Ike, & for all of us who knew her & loved her. Farewell, my old & dear friend.
In deepest sympathy, Deb Litton Read
