JOEL STORY Obituary

Mueller's Greenlee Funeral Home

Joel Gail Story, Sr., 75, of Pasco, Washington, died at home on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, after a courageous battle with liposarcoma cancer. Joel was born to Joel G. and Helen V. Story on May 25, 1935, on a farm outside of Ottawa, Kansas.

The family moved to Pasco when Joel was a young boy.

He attended Pasco Senior High School and retired from Cenex Transportation at age 60, where he was a supervisor in the transportation division.

Joel is survived by his wife of 48 years, Caryl and children, April Joelene Herron (Dennis) of Pasco, WA and children, Chad and Kelly; Joel G. Story, Jr. (Betty) of Pasco, WA and children Joshua, Lucas, Amy, D.J. and Brian; Gina Roundtree of Puyallup, WA; Tamme Ward (Bob) of Kennewick, WA and children Matt and Shane; Tim Story (Rebecca) of Kennewick, WA and children T.J. and Gabby; Todd Story of Bremerton, WA and daughter Jessica; Tonya Stevenson (Rob) of Kailua, HI and daughter Sydney; brothers Don Story (Linda) of Pasco, WA; Frank Story of Richland, WA; sister, Virginia Rhine of Yreka, CA; mother-in-law, Clara Gertrude Lux; sister-in-law, Sister M. Clare Anne (Cathy Lux); eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Albert Lux.

In early adulthood, Joel enjoyed racing stock cars in various places in the Northwest area. Joel was a lifelong mechanic and old car enthusiast. He loved working on and restoring old cars with all of his great friends of the Retreads Car Club, of which he was a proud member. His pride and joy was his restored 1956 Ford pickup, which he took to numerous car shows.

He was restoring his 1933 Willys with all of his treasured car club friends, and his 1964 Ford Thunderbird, with son Todd, at the time of his death.

As a devoted believer and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, he volunteered his time and talents to the South Hills Church car ministry and lawn/maintenance crew.

A celebration of his life will be on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at South Hills Church, 3700 W. 27th Avenue, Kennewick, with a reception to follow.

The family would like to thank Dr. Gabrielle Kane and the staff at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance; Dr. Steven Kincaid of Kennewick General Hospital and staff; and the nurses and staff of Hospice at The Chaplaincy for all of the care provided during dad's illness. A special thanks to those friends who continue to work on Joel's 1933 Willys. Donations may be made in Joel's memory to The Chaplaincy (Hospice), 2108 W. Entiat, Kennewick, WA 99336 or The Northwest Sarcoma Foundation, PO Box 91460, Portland, OR 97291

I was deeply honored to share time and conversation with Joel and Caryl as the chaplain on their care team from Hospice at The Chaplaincy. Joel faced his mortality with honesty and courage, admitting and sharing his fears, regrets, hopes and satisfactions; his anxiety about dying and his confidence in God's love and mercy. I salute how Joel drove with integrity his final bumpy lap around the track. Caryl, your care for Joel was magnificent. Finally, I'll never forget the image of Tim and Joe carrying their father up the stairs and into garage for the final time. What love in action. Well done, Story family.
