DONALD CAMPBELL Obituary

Kennewick, Wash.

Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home

Donald J. Campbell passed away Saturday, May 14, 2011, in Kennewick. He was born March 13, 1927, in Great Falls, Montana, to Murdo and Elizabeth Campbell, and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1945. He served in the Army Airborne Division from 1945 through 1947 and was stationed in Japan.

Don attended the University Of Montana on a football scholarship, and graduated from the School of Education in 1951. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and remained a strong 'Griz' supporter throughout his life.

Don's first teaching job was in Libby, Montana, where he served as the head football coach and assistant basketball coach for eight years. He moved his family to Kennewick in 1959, where he taught history and served as an assistant football coach at Kennewick High School. He attended Eastern Washington University during summer breaks, and graduated with masters in Secondary Education Administration. He then served as a counselor, athletic director, assistant principal, principal of Kennewick High School and Curriculum Coordinator prior to his retirement. As an administrator, he also served as a board member of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association for nine years including one term as president.

As an accomplished musician with the violin and ability to play just about any instrument he picked up, he helped form the Desert Thistle Pipes and Drums and bagpipe band in 1976, a band which is still going strong thirty-five years later.

Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia of Kennewick; sons Duncan (Patricia) of Pasco; Douglas (Diane) of Kennewick; daughters Beth Anne Fowler (Woodrow) of Kennewick; Kerry Finley (Jim) of Eureka, Montana; Kristin Heflick (Scott) of Yakima, Washington; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and brothers Murdo from Helena, Montana and Ken of Fort Collins, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tom and grandson Colin Campbell.

A mass in his memory will be held at the St. Joseph's Parish Chapel in Kennewick, Washington on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception/celebration of his life immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's name to the Inland Northwest Chapter Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 5072, Pasco, WA 99302.

I met Don due to his lead as the UM alumni coordinator. I was privileged to spend an annual afternoon of cheering on our beloved Grizzlies as they tried to administer the proper education to the dreaded Bobcats. Don was a gentleman and such a wonder. It was an honor for me to know he recognized me and welcomed me every year. God bless Don, Pat, and his family.

Just got back into town after a trip to Montana and Yellowstone and read that Don had passed. I was so sad to read of his passing. I met Don and Pat when they were the UM alumni coordinators. Such a wonderful couple and he was such a gentleman. Don surely is with the loved ones who passed before him and suffering no more. We'll miss you Don!
