Douglas D'Amore Obituary

D'AMORE, Douglas John The final buzzer sounded on Doug D'Amore as he left this game on April 17, 2017. Born July 21, 1950 to Anthony D'Amore and Violet Held who, along with his brother, Dennis and sister-in-law, Jayne, preceded him in death. 'Big Doug' is survived by his wife Jane (Shebuski); brother, Tom (Leticia) and sister, Debbie (David) and his five children, Sheri (Jon), Doug (Claire), Thomas (Jodi), Tyler and Jerry Hines. He was also "Papa" to nine grandchildren, Benjamin, Quintin, Cole, Emma, Cooper, Nora, Logan, Laynie and Gavin as well as 'Uncle Doug' to sixteen nieces and nephews. Having operated a group home for children in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems for over 35 years he was a foster father to another 350 boys for whom he was guide and guardian. Every boy was touched by his perpetual optimism, humor and conviction that they could succeed in life. Additionally, hundreds of young girls and boys addressed him as 'Coach' and were first hand witnesses to his love of sport, competition and the joy he took in teaching both skills and strategy. It is likely that when the final buzzer sounded, Doug hit the last shot for the win. He pretty much always did throughout his 66 plus years. The life and athletic achievements of all his children and grandchildren, the successes of his foster kids, the confidence imparted to those he coached found it origins in Doug's joy of life philosophy. His advice would always be the same regardless of the endeavor, "Take the shot." Regardless of the outcome everyone knew he would be there to congratulate or console and when necessary, urge on the next shot. A Celebration of Big Doug's joy for life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. at the Vistoso Funeral Home located at 2285 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd in Oro Valley. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Coach Doug D'Amore foundation at any Wells Fargo Bank in town or if you would like to make a wire donation to the foundation the account number is 8878964751. This foundation will fund an annual basketball summer camp for youth in need… The only way Coach would have it.

In disbelief!! I saw him the 15th of April at Frys on Lambert and La Canada, he was getting donuts for the boys. No surprise, he was a caring man and a thoughtful man, the man that was a confidant to the father of my son. My last discussion with Doug was a wonderful one, he saw Jadon and just couldn't believe how much he looked like Pat! I admire him, and I told him so. What a good hearted man who will be missed! and especially by Larry!
Im sorry for the loss of such a remarkable human being!

A giant among men. Through the hardest times of my life, Doug was there to support me, love me and encourage me. He was always teaching, even in the smallest moments. He is now a man for the ages. I couldn't have asked for a better Father Figure, friend or coach. He didn't coach basketball, he coached kids. And this kid now an adult, will spend the rest of my life trying to live every principal he taught me and pass it on to the next generation.

We parents and children were proud to be on his team. Rock Q

Doug, the impact you had on my son Fahd and his friends who played for you has lasted years. It continued through high school, college and beyond. We did not want our children to be coached by anyone else. As parents we could feel the trust, respect, and admiration they and their teammates had for you. They all wanted to win for you. I will always see and feel your spirit in each one of your children whom I occasionaly see. The void you leave behind will be filled by your beautiful family and the amazing memories you left us with. You will always be with us. We share in your family's loss.

So sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He was my cousin and we were very close when we were young. He was always such a sweetheart. Even though I hadn't seen him in many years, I always thought about him fondly. May God grant him eternal peace & joy. My deepest condolences to the D'Amore family.

I will always cherish everything Doug taught me about basketball. Some of the best times of my life were playing ball for Doug. I am so saddened hearing the news about Doug. He left a lasting impression on thousands of kids like me that will forever be grateful to him. Rest In Peace. You will be missed

Doug you will be missed by many. you have played an important role in so many childrens lives and a father figure to most whom didn't have a father around growing up. I can honestly say, while at the time i didn't know it or understand it, you impacted my life so much. You taught me alot and raised me into the man I am today.
