Howard Rosenfeld Obituary

Howard Morton Rosenfeld 12/14/1919 - 3/20/2011 Howard 91, passed away peacefully after a rich and interesting life. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jacqueline; his son, James Rosenfeld (Muriel) and his daughter, Laura Spiri (Jeff); his granddaughter, Mia Spiri and many loving nieces, nephews and family members also survive him. He was born in New York City to Arnold and Tillie Rosenfeld and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1940. He served in the Army throughout World War II. After marrying Jacqueline Levy of the pioneer Levy family he moved to Tucson and was an integral part of Levy's Department Store. In 1972, with his brother, Sanford Rosenfeld he started a chain of successful retail clothing stores in Southern California called Hubbub. After retiring he resettled in Tucson, but true to his nature developed a third career in the precious metal recycling business. Howard's interests were far ranging. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed art, literature, theater, early jazz, politics and others to numerous to list. He learned to use the computer when he was 80 and even learned to bake. His great love was playing tennis, which he did up until several years ago. All who knew him will miss his sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his mother, Tillie and his father, Arnold, also his beloved brother, Sanford. Howard will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service will be held at the chapel of EVERGREEN MORTUARY, 3015 N. Oracle Road at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2011. In lieu of flowers donations are encouraged to Planned Parenthood, Doctors Without Borders or a charity of ones' choice.

Howard was a mentor for me in many things. Although he was a generation plus older (funnier and wiser), he was able to reach down, and pull me up, to make choices which today have enhanced my life and the lives of my family. Thank you Howard Rosenfeld, I will miss you. My wife and I extend our condolences to the Rosenfeld family.

I was saddened to read the obit of Howie's passing. You can tell he didn't write it, though, not close to being as funny as Howie would have made it. The column does mention his humor, but doesn't begin to scratch the surface. Howie said and did some of the funniest things imaginable. I had the priviledge of working for and with Howie at Levy's, a store that was second to none here in town, and where Howie's departments were the finest in the city. I thought I knew retail before I went to work with Howie. Hah! Little did I know. What an educator he was to me. Super intelligent, he had the ability of extreme concentration and incredible retail savvy. Many of us lucky enough to work with and for Howard went on to bigger and better things, all due in no small part to Howard's tutelage. I will never forget Howard Rosenfeld. My condolences to his family and host of close friends. He will be missed.
