Janet EXCELL Obituary

EXCELL, Janet (Janna) A. Janna's beautiful soul transitioned from this world to the next on November 27, 2017, peacefully and with dignity surrounded by family and friends in Tucson, AZ. Janna was born June 4, 1945 in Vernon, TX to Robert and Blandina Rummel. She spent her childhood on a farm in Lockett, TX. Over the years, Janna told countless stories of gathering eggs, making butter, tending the garden, digging potatoes, shucking corn, and caring for livestock. As a teenager, every Saturday she assisted her mother, ensuring that Zion Lutheran Church was clean and presentable for Sunday worship. On Sundays, Janna directed the music, and played the organ and piano. Janna graduated from Lockett High School where she excelled in her studies. Janna was an active leader and loved playing competitive basketball. After graduating from Texas Tech University, Janna's journey led her to Lincoln, Nebraska where she pursued a career as an elementary school teacher, and eventually as a teacher mentor. It was this job that led to Janna's hiring to the University of Arizona faculty. At UA, she was involved in teaching the course Psychology of Death and Loss. In 1979, Janna was instrumental in helping establish one of the first three hospices in the United States, Hill Haven, in Tucson. From here, Janna focused her professional career on death, crisis, bereavement and spiritual communications. After moving on from Hill Haven, she worked at Evergreen Mortuary for 20 years. Janna maintained a private practice in bereavement counseling until 2011, but led grief groups every Tuesday until August 2017. In 1982, Janna was a catalyst in Tucson, forming the first support group for Homicide Survivors. In 1984, she founded and facilitated the local Tucson Near-Death Experience group, which ran for 30 years. Janna went on to author two books, "A Time to Grieve, A Time to Dance" and "Soul Light: Connection between Worlds." It was Janna's dream to live in the warmth and beauty of the Sonoran desert. Janna adored driving around Tucson and Gates Pass in her iconic green BMW Z3 convertible. Janna is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Blandina Rummel, her oldest brother, Robert Lee Rummel (Vickie),  and their son, Russell. Janna is survived by her sister, Carolyn Skov (Norval); her brother, Gene Rummel (Evelyn); and her beloved niece, Karen Rummel (Beth Booher). Additionally, her extended Tucson family, Gloria Ramirez (Jeffrey Mead), and their son, Eli (Anna), whose gracious care and support is truly appreciated. Janna is also survived by many other nephews and nieces, associates, and friends. Janna graciously acknowledges her mentors: Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D, as well as Robert L. Wrenn, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of  Psychology at the University of Arizona. Janna's family thanks the staff at Soulistic Hospice for their compassion and care. Janna carried exceptional charisma, her enthusiastic bright smile and warm character touched all those who knew her in life. There will never be another equal to Janna Excell. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunrise Chapel, 8421 E. Wrightstown Rd, Tucson, AZ 85715. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Mead Foster Fund for Cats care of Benarda Veterinary Hospital. 2555 E. Broadway Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85716. In honor of Janna's two beloved surviving cats, LJ and Samantha. Live, laugh, and love for time is fleeting and it goes by quickly. Arrangements by ANGEL VALLEY FUNERAL HOME.

Janna saved my sanity with her insightful grief counseling after losing my 26 yr old son to AIDS In 1987. She encouraged me to tell his story to UofA classes and other groups, to help calm fears associated with AIDS and heal my broken heart in the process. Janna was a beautiful, caring, intuitive soul who shared her light and healing love with many. She was a gift of survival and healing to me and many others.

Janna saved my life. An NDE almost took my life when I met Janna and her NDE support group. I went to Janna after my first NDE group meeting and told her my story. She told me I had an NDE and helped me to understand that what I experienced was far from strange and unusual. She took me from being unable to speak for 20 years to doing a news report with Guy Ashley on KGUN 9. Then Janna helped me with being a grief conduit after 911. I could not have survived either experience without her help. I know now that she prepared me to be a grief conduit for the souls who didn't know they had been so abruptly taken from this world and desperately needed help crossing over. That experience was the most traumatic 3 days of my life. Janna helped me to understand that grief and passing so tragically needs a conduit and I was there. I pray that the experience I had those days helped souls to pass over to peace. I could not have done that without Janna's support and teaching. I just hope with Janna's help I accomplished the purpose my NDE sent me back to life for. Thank you Janna. I could not have emotionally survived my NDE and 911 without you. I love you more than I can express. You helped me with the purpose I was sent back to life for.

I am so very sorry about your illness and passing. I did not know or understand why my phone calls were not being returned. I found your memorial approximately one year ago. I now understand that you were sick and did not wish to burden me with the information. I wish that I had known and could have tried to bring you love and some type of cheerfulness in the end. You always did your best to help my sweet Mother and I. I realize that you'all have probably seen each other in Heaven, and now you know why my sweet Dad was so important to us as well as my Uncle Bogie. We love you Janna. No one can fill your shoes.

In the stillness of the night, I have walked in your streets, and my spirit has entered your houses. And your heartbeats were in my heart, and your breath was upon my face, and I knew you all. Ay, I knew your joy and your pain, and in your sleep your dreams were my dreams. Farewell~ Love you more.

I had this urge to call you over the last few months. Was it you telling me to Google you one last time Jan? I hope you're happy and reunited with your soul mate. I'm sure he has been waiting patiently for you.

OMG, there are no words. I just was googling for information about Janna's group to tell a friend whose mother died a few months ago, and I found her obituary. I am heartsick. I did not even know that Janna was ill.

I have attended Janna's group off and on for more than 15 years. I lost the last member of my family of origin in 2000 when my father died and have struggled for years with being the last one left. Janna's group was a place I could always go to for emotional support from others going through grief. There were many other people in her group that had attended for years like I did and continued to find it a source of comfort and solace. Janna was so phenomenal at letting people express their grief in whatever way was most comfortable for them, with no judgement and best of all, no religion.

I don't believe in an afterlife but i do believe that Janna's influence will continue for a very long time and I am incredibly saddened by her death. I am glad for her sake that she has escaped from earth and pain. For her remaining family if there are any, please know what a wonder she was.

You touched us all by teaching us how to get through death loss and now we face the loss of you. I will look for you in the miracles of life... a butterfly, a feather that has fallen from heaven, a smile, and through love that never dies. You inspired us to write Hey You's From Heaven and now I await one from you my forever friend! Until we meet again... God speed!

Janna walked me through beginning to live again after my son, Dan Hill died of AIDS in 1987. She was my counselor, mentor and friend, bringing comfort and healing as I reinvested in life without Danny. I was blessed by her gentle but powerful presence. Again, she was there for me after the death of my beautiful daughter, Cherie. She has touched countless lives. I will never forget our beautiful, insightful, sweet, gentle Janna.
