Donald ARVESON Obituary

ARVESON, Donald F. 93, of Tucson, went to be with his Lord July 1, 2017. Don was very dedicated to His Lord Jesus Christ and has been on a journey to his heavenly destination since the age of 38 when he invited Christ into his life and became a new person. Born in Albert Lea, MN, in 1924 to Henry and Erna Arveson, he graduated from high school in Albert Lea and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and entered the Navy officer program at Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN. He was commissioned in 1944 and immediately reported to the Navy Underwater Demolition Team in Florida. He served with the UDT for the balance of WWII and was called again to duty during the Korean War. He was the commanding officer of several Naval Reserve commands in Tucson, and was ultimately appointed group commander over all the Naval Reserve commands in the area. The UDT became the Navy Seals in the 1970's and Captain Arveson qualified as a Seal shortly after. After active duty, he attended the University of Arizona Law School, graduating in 1950. He was a practicing attorney in Tucson for over 50 years, retiring in 1992. After receiving the Lord Jesus Christ he became involved with Bible Study Fellowship and ultimately became a teaching leader for men representing over 60 churches. He was a member of Rincon Mountain Presbyterian Church (PCA). Our dad reminisced: "I have had a wonderful, challenging life, transitioning from general selfishness to the exciting life of surrendering all to Jesus Christ. I have experienced the wonderful realization that my life is in the hands of God, who is always there and never lets me down."  Don is with his Savior, not because of any goodness on his part, but all because of what Jesus did for him. He would say to you, "A life in Christ is the only way to go for the joy of being His and amazingly, that includes eternal life with Him." He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Ross of Tucson, whom he met at the Hotel del Coronado during an afternoon tea dance.  Don is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Thomas of Saddlebrook, AZ and her daughter, Lisa Pacior of Indiana; his four daughters, Anne (Monte) Keltner of Monterey, CA, Mary Beth (Bob) Newman of Tucson, Janet Rustenbach of Colorado Springs, CO and Susan (John) O'Hair of Tucson as well as by 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Rincon Mountain Church with a joyful celebration thereafter. Please give any memorial gifts to the Christian organization of your choice or Desert Christian Schools of Tucson. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE HEATHER MORTUARY.

To the Arveson Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

For Don Arveson's family: Our entire family is so sad for your combined loss of both Don and Margaret, your parents. On the "happy side" as your dad and friend would say "A life with Christ is the only way to travel for the joy of being HIS now and in Eternity.
Thirty Six years ago we sent my dad, Melvin Ellingson, who was a farmer from ND and a life long Lutheran and who had terminal cancer to see Don A. to get his estate paperwork done. After meeting my parents Don started the process by sharing his testimony and what Christ had done for him. My dad, being very frugal and thinking he was paying $/hour after 20 minutes looked at watch. Don noticed this and said something like "getting your estate paperwork done is very important and we will get to that. However, even more important is knowing where you will spend eternity is more important so with your permission I want to share Gods love and His salvation with you first. I will bill you for my legal work but not any time taken to share Christ with you. Is that okay with you both". My parents said it was. After sharing with my parents (my mom was already saved) Don asked my dad, Melvin, would you like to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior??
My Dad, after years of different family members asking him the same question and Melvin always answering " I am a Lutheran, both baptized as a baby and later confirmed, so I am already set to go to heaven-don't worry about me, worry about yourself" my dad told Don "Yes, I would like to accept Jesus Christ as my savior!
My mother almost fell out of her chair!
My dad came over to our home that evening, full of joy and saying "that Don Arveson-he is something else"
My dad was a different man after that time with Don. We have always been so grateful to Don and his family for taking the time to share Christ with my parents, especially my father, Melvin Ellingson, who passed into glory just 4 months later and now awaits his wife and each of his six children, all due to Don Arveson who took the time to share Christ with my parents who he had just met.
Col.1:28 We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ"

Dear Don,
May you find joy in Heaven as you reunite with your wife. I know you missed her deeply. I enjoyed listening to your loving memories of her when I visited. It was the best part of the day, to see your eyes light up as you spoke of her and your 4 lovely daughters and their families. It's never easy loosing a parent, much less two of them. For your family I send lots of loving energy their way, along with the reassurance that you loved them all. Sincerely, one of your caregivers from Family Home Care.
