Joseph NEVIN Obituary

NEVIN, Joseph "Joe" E. Saturday, February 3, 2018, Joe Nevin passed away in Tucson, Arizona. The youngest of three children born to Jewel and Harold Nevin, Joe made his appearance on this earth May 27, 1936 in Butte, Montana. After graduating from Boys Central High School, he attended the Montana School of Mines before entering the Army where he was stationed in Germany. Upon his return to the states, he earned a bachelors degree in business from the University of Montana. January 1962, Joe married the nursing student who stole his heart, Marilyn Jensen, and they raised two children: Julie (Philip Suek), and Rick Nevin. Family was the center of his existence and Joe was the proud grandfather of Thomas Joseph "TJ" (Blair), Jonathan and Alison. Joe is also survived by his beloved sister, Margaret Bossard; and his deeply loved and very special nieces and nephews: Julie Norman, Janice Elliott, Brian Bossard, Dona Ball, Dan Riley, David Riley and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Marilyn, and treasured sister, Jean Riley, along with much-loved brother-in-law, Floyd Bossard. Professionally, Joe began his employment with Mountain Bell and spent 30 years with the Bell System where he had various management assignments within Montana, Colorado, New York, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, where he finally settled. After retiring from the Bell System, Joe spent a decade each as the Executive Director of the Pima Community College Foundation and Director of the Goodwill Foundation. Intent on sharing the knowledge and experience gained over his lifetime, Joe was known to mentor and guide many individuals he met through his work with Pima Community College, University of Arizona, Goodwill and Rotary International. Committed to his community he was deeply involved in funding-raising for the Catholic Diocese of Southern Arizona, Community Food Bank, United Way of Tucson, and YMCA. The Rotary was a personal priority with Joe; he was a life-long active member. Highly recognized as a civic leader, Joe received numerous awards and honors from community organizations and boards upon which he served. Joe was a recipient of the Orville McPhearson Annual Award. Joe was a multiple recipient of the Paul Harris Fellows, and his financial contributions helped other Rotarians receive their Paul Harris Fellows, as well. A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, February 8, 2018, 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Tucson. Late May the Rite of Committal will be in the Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum in Butte, Montana. Joe's love of Montana never faded and he continued to spend summers "back home". In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Rotary Club of Tucson Foundation, 3900 E. Timrod St., Suite #4, Tucson, Arizona 85711; the Butte Emergency Food Bank or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.

I had no idea Joe had gone to Heaven. This man was like a second Father to me. I sent Joe a Xmas card, like I have done for the last 30 years, and it was returned. I starting asking questions. I was deeply sadden to find out Joe was was not around. I can't express how much I loved him. From our first meeting at my business, Cafe Melange, we were friends for life. We put together Thanksgiving boxes for the needy together, on the Board of Directors for the Copper Bowl together and I was was a poll bearer for his wife's service. What a lost. he will always be in my thoughts.

What a great personality. You knew immediately who was speaking at Rotary when he started. What a voice. Was a pleasure to know him and be a fellow Rotarian for the last 6 years.

Condolences to the family. Joe and I were friends/fellow Tucson Rotarians for 13 years, working on club projects. They broke the mold when they made Joe. What you saw with Joe, was what you got. He and Suzanne Lawder were Mr/Ms. Goodwill in Tucson. Joe managed Ma Bell locally, when I was Supt. of Saguaro Nat. Mon. Found an illegal Bell facility built within the park. Joe and I settled the matter quietly over coffee in half an hour. Great guy! There will never be an end to the good that Joe did in his lifetime...

Joe was one of the first "community" people I met through United Way when I moved to Tucson in 1985. What a gift to reconnect with him 20 years later through Rotary. Who now days sends handwritten Thank You notes just because you brought a few boxes of clothing for donation to Goodwill....JOE NEVIN. He defined "Class Act!"

My deepest condolences to Joe's Family and Friends. I had the privilege and honor to meet Joe about 10 years ago at Goodwill. Almost every morning he would pop in to say good morning and have our morning chat. Usually about his grandchildren, football, or Butte, Montana! He was such a caring and amazing man. I never met such a genuine, kind, giving soul. I am so grateful for his kindness and mentorship. He will be missed dearly by the Tucson community.
