Edward BOLDING Obituary

BOLDING, Edward P. 81, died June 27, 2017 amid high hopes that his Arizona Diamondbacks would continue their winning ways this year.  Feisty till the end but with good humor, he was on a mission:  To encourage TMC to add D-backs TV channel for patients.  "After all, it's Arizona's baseball team."   In his last days, he also eagerly anticipated the NFL season to watch the Minnesota Vikings where his grandnephew, QB Case Keenum, moved.  Edward was born in San Angelo, TX and attended San Angelo Junior College before earning his BA at the University of Texas in Austin.  He received his law degree there in 1960 and practiced law in Gilmer and San Angelo, TX.  The family moved to Tucson in 1969 where he served as Pima County Public Defender from 1972-1974 before creating the firm of Bolding, Oseran and Zavala.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Sid and Anne Clare "AC" Bolding, and daughter, Elizabeth Bolding.  He is survived by his three sisters, Anne Dickens (San Angelo), Mary Ruby Land (Katy) and Stella Wolfenbarger (Mertzon) and their many family members in Texas; his former spouse Betsy; sons, John P. (Wendy) and Ted G. (Marianne) and grandchildren, Nick Wolff and Iliana Bolding; Keoni and Aidan Bolding; and Heather and Chelsea Bolding. Many thanks to Tom and Colistia Sawyer for their warm friendship and care for Edward.  No service, but a gathering for family and friends is planned Sunday, July 23, 2017.  Email [email protected] for details. Contributions in Ed's honor are welcome at the Community Food Bank.

Things were hard for lawyer when I came to Tucson from Michigan. I met Ed while taking a course to pass the bar examination. At the same time Ed was doing income tax preparation for the public. He was also so energetic, and yet with a smile on his face. I went to Yuma to practice because I could not find anything in Tucson. My wife and I hated it, in Yuma, but we had two small boys. One day we got a phone call from Ed. Ed is now the Public Defender for Tucson. He offered me a job, and asked how much I wanted in salary. I told Ed what I thought was fair. Ed raised the salary that I had asked for. Ed brought in excellent lawyers, and we had a wonderful office. Clients who had private lawyers wanted the Public Defender because of our reputation. Ed was a great lawyer, and he would sit on a chair and talk to the jury in his folksy manner. And of course he had a lot of success trying cases. I was sorry to see Ed leave to start a private practice. I was saddened to hear of ED's death. If God ever needs an attorney in his everlasting fight with the Devil, I am sure he will ask for Ed's help. And , the Devil will wish that he never heard of 'Our ED".

Ed gave me a job in the Public Defenders Office, and was a dear friend. I am so sorry for the loss to his family I just learned of his death, since I am no longer in Tucson.

To the Bolding Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

I loved working as Ed's legal assistant and office manager while at Bolding and Zavala. He was a southern gentleman with a great laugh and sense of humor! Because of his guidance over those 5 years, I was able to go out as a paralegal independent contractor when he retired in 1981. He was truly a mentor and a great great lawyer! I last saw him a year ago at a Dollar store and he was buying balloons for his granddaughter's birthday. He was someone who made a lasting impression in my life.
Rest in peace buddy! Love, Geri Land Linehan

Ed was the only lawyer willing to take my case. We prevailed and I have always had a great respect for his courage in doing so.

To Ed's family...I have a sparkliing memory of meeting Ed in the mid 70's; I was just back from a year-long trip to South America. He wanted details.
I had them. We all shared.

Ed was always my hero, no matter the ups and downs of his life. He was one of the best lawyers I have ever met. His abilities will be sorely missed.
