Ellsworth Shaw Obituary

Ellsworth Shaw died in his bed at his family home on the afternoon of July 19, 2009. He was surrounded by family and friends, as he had been for the final two months of his life, battling illness and age. Ellsworth was born Harry Ellsworth Shaw in Chicago, Illinois on March 7, 1920, to Harry Dalton Shaw, a chemist for the railroad, and Elizabeth Lazar, a light opera singer and homemaker. He had one brother, Donald, who served in Korea and died in 1993. Ellsworth received a BS in chemistry at the University of Chicago, and went on to receive a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Arizona in 1949. He volunteered to serve his country during WWII, joining the Navy as a commissioned officer and serving in the Pacific Theater. In 1943, he came to Arizona to join his future bride, Elizabeth Lewis. Together they built the home that has remained the family residence to this day. In the early '50s he conducted notable research for the USDA in Maryland. Upon returning to Tucson, he developed a deep interest in the people and culture of Mexico, establishing a home for the family in Caborca, Sonora, and operating a commercial cotton farm just outside the town. In 1970, having become a leading expert in soils chemistry and consulting for many years in Southwestern commercial agriculture, he shifted his work life to Culiacan, Sinaloa to join a large vegetable producer, Agricola Canelos. He directed the research and development department for this company for the next 39 years, returning frequently to Tucson to visit with his family. He was responsible for several important technological advances in vegetable farming that were eventually adopted industry-wide. Just as important to him as his work were the many friendships he forged in Mexico, which continued until his death. He was known throughout Mexico's vast, west coast vegetable-growing region as El Doctor, or simply 'Doc,' the brilliant, energetic gringo who came down for a visit and never left. Throughout his life, he held deep affection and appreciation for the arts, and was a founding member of the Tucson Civic Ballet, which later became, and still is, the Arizona Ballet Company. Ellsworth is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his children, Victoria, Frank, Rebecca, Thomas, John, Mary, Thalia, and Hebe; his grandchildren, Alejandro, Metta, Demetrio, Matthew, Aurelia, Megan, Maja, April, Morgan, Vanessa, Christina, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Gregorio, Victoria, Stephen, Rebecca, Cancion, Pierre, and Andres, and his great-grandchildren, Brittney, Anthony, Ruby, Trevor, Clementine, Robert, Solomon, Savannah, Esme, Allie, Adriana, Caroline, Allegra, Randy Lynn, John Paul, and Viggo. Ellsworth was loved and will be missed.

I found myself thinking about Dr. Shaw today and was very pleased to find this dedication to him. He was one of those very special people that I would never forget. I lived in Culiacan from 1987 until 1993 as an on-site employee for Dole Fresh Vegetables who was partners with the Canelos for those years. I spent a lot of time with Dr. Shaw learning about the various vegetables that we were planting. Dr. Shaw was a very dedicated scientist who was able to share his deep knowledge of vegetables very effectively with people of all different levels of education. He was a very kind person, was always positive and had a great sense of humor. There's no doubt he did many things to make the world a better place!

Mr. Shaw,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the USN fighting the Japanese in the Pacific during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. Having worked with the USDA Produce Inspection Service in Nogales for many years, along with my contacts at the U of A Agriculture Department, over 30 years ago I became aware of a person named "Doc" and the work he was doing for the Canelos farming operation in Culiacan. It was only in the past 12 years that I had the opportunity to know him in a more personal way. One of my fond memories came a few years ago when "Doc", Alejandro Jr., and I played golf at Kino Springs in Nogales and "Doc" beat both of us. The contributions he has made in the field of Agriculture will be surely missed.
Sincerely

My sympathy goes out to all of the family. My memories of all of you go back many years ago in the 1950's and 60's when Ellsworth and William Thomas spent some good times together. I remember being in your home and having so much fun with all the children. I especially remember Victoria. I know that my dad and Ellsworth shared their love of agriculture with one another. Elizabeth Shaw was my piano teacher for several years in the late 1950's. I remember my dad going to the farm in Carborca a few times. I know you all have lots of good memories of him that will be with you always.
With sincere sympathy

Condolences to the family. A fascinating man and one who did a lot for the people in Mexico. Where did he pass away - in Tucson or in Mexico?
