Juanita Shackelford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2011.
Juanita Esther Shackelford "Nita" peacefully left this world on August 28, 2011, four days after her beloved husband, Winn Shackelford. Nita was born on April 30, 1916 in Atchison, Kansas. She worked in the bookkeeping department of Montgomery Ward before becoming an airline stewardess for TWA. She met Winn on VJ Day while celebrating on the streets of Kansas City, Missouri. They were married in 1946 and moved to Tucson, Arizona. They had two daughters, Kay and Carol. Nita ran the household and shared in a vibrant community and social life with Winn. In 1975 she and Winn moved to Southern California, retiring in Solana Beach. For a number of years, Nita volunteered at the Scripps Hospital Thrift Shop. She and Winn traveled domestically and abroad, she had many loving friends, loved board games and baseball. She and Winn returned to Tucson in 2002 to be closer to their daughters and granddaughters. She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Kay McGarvin and Carol Lynn Craft; four granddaughters, Tracy (Charles) Micka, Carrie Schloss, Courtney (Joey) Ingegneri, Gabriela Craft and four great- granddaughters, Maddison and Riley Schloss, Merrina Micka and Gianna Craft. She was a big fan of the Diamondbacks. Her enthusiasm and enjoyment of watching sports is a tradition the family will miss. Nita was a wonderful homemaker, gardener, sports fanatic and a very classy fashionista. Her family will miss her energy, her strong will and her sense of humor. Arrangements entrusted to ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.

Carol, Tracy, Carrie, and our beloved Courtney, Gabby, and the rest of your family, we are so saddened by the loss of your father, mother, grandpa, and grandma. They were indeed two lovely, sweet, good natured people, full of love for all of you. Words can't express our sorrow for you all, but we rejoice that your loved ones are in the arms of our precious Lord. Love to you all, Joe and Rachel Ingegneri

Oh dear Kay and Carol, my heart goes out to you and your families. We have such fond memories of your parents. My mother would be bereft if she knew she'd lost her two dear friends; I will protect her from this sad, sad news. Your mother was beautiful, fashionable, fun and had such class and grace. She and Lera shared many laughs in their lifelong friendship. When we brought my mother to Tucson about eight years ago to see your folks, Nita was so loving and kind to Lera, whose memory was failing even then. Our family sends love and peace to you all.
