Harry Fontenova Obituary

Harry Lou Fontenova, D.O. 87, passed away in peace at his home on St. Andrew's Drive in Tucson. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Fontenova, brothers, Evo and John Fontenova. He is survived by his sister, Pauline Comitz; his nieces, Margaret Mary Johnson and Thea Meyer; and his nephew, Edward Comitz. Born in Plains, Pennsylvania, to parents who immigrated from Italy and owned a grocery store. As a boy, he carried groceries to his parents' customers. Dr. Fontenova attended Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School before going to Villanova College in 1943. He later attended Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medical Surgery. In 1944, he was called into the Army Medical Corp., where he met his wife and married her in 1947. After army service, he returned to the United States and enrolled at the University of Des Moines College of Medicine and Surgery, then interned at Flint Osteopathic Hospital. Dr. Fontenova arrived in Tucson in 1950, opening his practice at Pima and Alvernon. In 1957, he and five other physicians built Tucson General Hospital, where he was Chief of Staff and Surgery on three separate occasions and awarded the Honor and Achievement Award in Medicine and Surgery in 1980. One of his greatest achievements was his admittance into the Lourdes International Medical Bureau in France. In the 1950's, Dr. Fontenova was involved in sports medicine and was the physician for the El Rio Boxing Association and part-time physician for the University of Arizona football and basketball teams. In 1957, he and several businessmen founded the Tucson Cowboys Football Team, the only franchise professional football team other than the NFL. Dr. Fontenova was a member of El Rio, 49ers and Skyline Country Clubs and had 10 holes in one in his golfing career. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the American Heart Association or the Tucson Humane Society. The family would like to thank Odyssey Hospice and caregivers, Betty, Lilia and Aurelia. Visitation will be at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd., on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. A Rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. Services will be private.

My family and I met "dottore Fontenova" shortly after arriving in Tucson from Italy in 1955. (I was 8 years old then) We needed a doctor who not only spoke Italian, but who also could be a friend. (that's the way it is in the old country). Harry Fontenova and our family developed a friendship that would span a lifetime. My dad Enrico, passed away 11 years ago, but in this time as I would see Harry, he would always ask about my mother Augusta. "Come va tua Mamma?", he would ask? What a wonderful man. I will miss him. Our heartfelt condolences to his family.

My family first met Dr Fontenova in 1960, recomended by a friend. He was truly a family doctor tending to our entire family for many years. Over the years he became a friend to us, and we even retired in the same location.(white Mountains). My prayers are with his family.

My father seldom called him Harry. He called him "Onorato," meaning honored one or worthy of respect. He will always be that to our family. How truly beautiful was the love my father had for this man. Eddie, how deeply Uncle Harry loved you and never failed to tell me of your goodness and success. His eyes always lit up when speaking of you!
Harry always let me know he was praying for my family. Now I am praying for yours.

Blessings,

Others may comment here, but I know I speak for all the members of his Skyline golf group - Harry will be deeply missed. He gave much to this community, and he was a competitor til the end.

May his family relish their memories of him.

My father also was involved with the Tucson Cowboys, (Bob Vuke) I was very young then but as I grew up I recall hearing the names of Fontenova and Duncan Goodell who I believe was also involved in starting the Cowboys. My father passed away in 1996.
God bless your family at this time and may you have peace in your memories.

Dear Pauline, Margaret Mary, Thea and Eddie...a dear friend in Tucson, who knows of my love for Doc and Ellen, alerted me to Dr. Fontenova's obituary. I'm extremely saddened at his passing but I'm very happy I got to see him over Christmas. We talked of you all and happy memories of Ellen, Nona, Pop and my parents. We also talked of my being named for Ellen and the safe delivery Dr. F. provided for me into the world. I had such a lovely visit with him and I certainly will miss him. Pauline, I know you hadn't been feeling well, and I hope you're better. All of my thoughts are with you and I will be with you in spirit on Wednesday. All my love to a very special family. My family knew Dr. Fontenova well. My Father had Frontier Village Drug at
Alvernon and Pima. He sold the store in 1960 and retired. I moved from Tucson in 1967. Dr. Fontenova alway highly thought of by our family.
