Elisabetta Pierazzo Obituary

Elisabetta "Betty" Pierazzo passed away at her home in Tucson, Arizona on May 15, 2011. She was taken from us far too soon at age 47. Betty was a Senior Scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson. She was an expert in the area of impact modeling and on the astrobiological and environmental effects of impacts on Earth and Mars. She was also an expert on Meteor Crater in Arizona and made several appearances on national and international broadcasts of programs including National Geographic specials. In addition to her science, Betty passionately promoted science education and public outreach. She took time away from her successful research career to teach classes in astrobiology and science at the University of Arizona, she developed interactive websites and impact rock and meteorite kits for classroom use, and created professional development workshops for elementary and middle-school science teachers. Betty arrived in the United States in 1989 from Italy and the following year attended graduate school at the Department of Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona. She handled the difficulties of living in a foreign country by opening her house and her kitchen to others. She received her Ph.D. in 1997, and the quality of her graduate work was recognized by the University of Arizona with the Gerard P. Kuiper Memorial Award. She was cherished by very many people for her staunch friendship and support. She inspired countless people as a colleague, teacher, mentor and friend. Her loss is great to all those who knew her and worked with her. She is survived by her husband, Keith Powell from Tucson, AZ; her mother, Maria Scattolin and her brother, Flavio Pierazzo both from Noale, Italy. A Viewing will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at EVERGREEN MORTUARY, 3015 North Oracle Road. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011 at St. Thomas the Apostle Chapel, 5150 N. Valley View Rd.

We knew Betty best around the soccer field. She always brought a smile and a bundle of energy. She loved life and all that it had to offer. We will miss her greatly and feel blessed to have known her.

I'm a retired scientist living in Noale, her birthplace. I was recently settled in this tiny town, in the 80's, when I meet her; at the time she was deciding the the University course to attend at the Padua University; we have had some discussions about this, because I was graduated in the same science branch, Physics, she was just going to choose. I gratefully remember her youthful enthusiasm for science which has carryed her away in a far country, along the path of the research of the primordial age. Betty you'll remain in our thoughts, toghether with your father, sincere codolences to her husband, mother & brother, a big hug to all which loved her

I've played soccer with Betty for a number of years. I was always impressed with her kindness, energy and just such a good person. We could always count on Betty to be there, to fight for the ball, and battle through any aches she might have to do the best she could. My kids loved her, we loved her and we will miss her dearly.

I had the great opportunity to learn from Betty at a workshop for teachers a year or so ago. Her enthusiasm for what she taught me will live on in the experiences I pass on to the students of my classes!! May God Bless Betty and all those who knew her!

While the cratering community lost an unusually creative and respected member, most of us also lost a dear friend. I do not know what hurts more. She will live in our memory, mine for sure, as a bright star. Fred Horz

I am shocked at the news of Betty's passing. I used to play soccer with her a couple of years ago and was amazed at her passion for life. Betty was a very sweet and compassionate woman and I will never forget her.
I am so sorry for your loss and may God Bless the family.
