Ramon Martinez Obituary

Ramon "Ray" Martinez III 7/15/59 - 3/25/14 "What matters most is the dash between the years". Ray was born in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Dearborn, the only child of Julie and Ramon Martinez II (AKA Mumsy and Killer to many of his friends and classmates). He was an extremely witty, passionate, and loyal man, the kind of guy everyone wanted to be around. Sadly, he spent the last few years of his life fighting two debilitating diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and MS, and was in great pain. He had many friends who provided him with support during those painful years. His sons would like to thank those who reached out to him, helped him with daily routines, and kept him company during his lonely times. Ray's family moved to Tucson in 1968. He graduated from Sahuaro High School in 1977 and was president of his senior class. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Political Science. Ray was most passionate about sports, and for this reason he opened his own sporting goods store and called it "The Sports Place". After the store closed, he got his dream job working at McKale Center as an Assistant Development Officer for Athletics. Due to his disabilities, he had to retire early, and he described his last day as one of the worst in his life. Ray grew up spending his afternoons listening to Vin Scully announce the Dodger games on the radio. That passion was squelched by baseball strikes and free agency. He couldn't understand how a guy in a Dodger uniform could ever play for another team. He was all about loyalty. He also loved the Wildcats. He swore one day he'd watch the U of A football team go to the Rose Bowl. God took him too soon. Ray touched so many lives, and once said, and I quote, "For the record, some day when it's my funeral you're planning, I expect you guys (his sons) to take roll. I wanna know who's not there (oh…don't kid yourself, I'll KNOW) and sell "priority seats" like I used to at McKale." He was always ready with a witty phrase. He joked his way through his pain. When asked "How ya doing Ray?" his response was "Just another day in paradise". He was optimistic, believing that everything would work its way out. He even joked about death and said that on his mythical tombstone, it would state that "THIS TIME THE PARACHUTE DIDN'T OPEN". We'll miss you Ray. You are now at peace and free from pain. Ray is survived by his two incredible sons, Danny and Bobby Martinez. Please visit the Facebook page entitled "Friends of Ray Martinez" for information about services. Ray was a good friend. He was Best Man at our wedding and vice-versa. When Bobby and he got together it was like they didn't miss a beat. There was always laughter. Ray lived his life from the heart and had a passion for all he loved. Our World has suffered great loss. I am glad he was my friend. Ray, I'll see you when I get there! Save a mansion for me and Bobby right next to yours! Don't forget to dance on the Golden Streets

Ray, you were one of a kind in the truest sense. I will miss all our many UofA discussions and friendly disagreements over Wildcat sports and politics. Most of all, I will miss your friendship and nice visits over some Lucky Wishbone whenever I was in town. There is not a good word for it in English so let's just say "Au Revoir" - we'll meet again ...

Lamento mucho su perdida, pero en la Biblia dice que "va haber resurreccion" en (Hechos 24:15) y si tiene Biblia lo puede buscar alli.

""My father used to take my brother and I to The Sports Place when we were much younger. What I remember most was how warm and talkative Ray was. he was always so welcoming. My thoughts go out to his family."

I had the great honor and privilege of getting to know Ray over the past four years. The Wildcats and his boys were the hi-light of his life. He was kind, compassionate and humorous during all the times someone else was trying to be those things for him. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on in everyone who had the good fortune to know him; most especially, his sons.

Dear Family of Ray - Mike and I will miss Ray a lot. We were just in Tucson in Feb 2014 for 3 weeks and visited with Ray about 5 times and brought dinner. We shared some good conversations; when I would ask Ray how he was doing his response was always GRRReat! Then later a few concerns would slip out which I'm glad he felt easy with us to be honest. We'll miss you a lot Ray - you had a wonderful philosophy and maturity. Peace to you and your sons Danny and Bobby. Love, Barb & Mike

Ray was a very special man . I was privegled to get to know him as the case manager for his home care services and feel we developed a true friendship even though I wasn't a true sports fan. He forgave me! He had a special caregiver , Patricia who has been with Ray for a long time and feels as she has lost a dear friend. Rest in peace Ray and lets all have breakfast at The Good Egg!

It was a pleasure and a privilege to have known Ray for a few short years. He always had a smile and a kind word for everybody. His love of sports, and for his favorite teams, are legendary. He was quick to give credit where credit was due. We will all miss him dearly.

After the tears have dried and the goodbyes have been said, all we have to hold onto are the happy memories that we have shared with our beloved, warm-hearted Ray. This is what keeps him alive in our hearts and in our minds, and he will continue to live on, through us. My condolences. Jody Darnell Jensen, Sahuaro Class of 1977

When I think of Ray I remember two things above all others. Those crazy crazy nights at Gabby and Jays. And how incredibly kind he was to our son who was an athlete at Sahuaro, back when he had the store.
A genuine original with a Wildcat's heart.

Ray and I became friends during my 10 year ownership of the Alphagraphics stores on Broadway. We did business together and went on several Arizona football road trips and had a blast each and every time. He was always upbeat and just fun to be around. His bad jokes and BIG smile will be missed.
