Larry BRADLEY Obituary

BRADLEY, Larry P., died in Tucson, Arizona, on January 21, 2017, of Parkinson's disease. He was seventy-one years old. He is survived by a wife, Johanna Bradley; two brothers, Richard Bradley and Steven Bradley, and his adored Irish Wolfhound, Sofie. Funeral Services were held in Sunset View Cemetery, El Cerrito, California, where he was buried in a double grave he and his wife had chosen, quite close to where her parents lie. Larry's mother and father, Marion Bebb Bradley and Gilbert Francis Bradley, were Arizonans, although Larry was born in 1945 in Bryan, Texas, near the airbase where his father was a flight instructor. Larry's boyhood was spent first in Phoenix and then in Tucson, where he graduated from Rincon High School. While in high school, he was an exchange student in Indonesia, under the auspices of the American Field Service. Larry graduated from Yale University, where he served in R.O.T.C. for four years. He earned a Ph.D. at The Claremont Graduate School, in Claremont, California. In 1971, he married Johanna Rediger Bradley, known as Jana by family and friends, and they left immediately for London, England, where they lived for a year while he worked on his Ph.D. thesis. In 1975, he was hired by Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he taught for twenty-five years, before retiring to Tucson. He was much loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. Remembrances of Larry may be sent to the charity of your choice, or St Labre Indian School, E. Tongue River Road, Ashland, MT 59004. Arrangements by DESERT SUNSET FUNERAL HOME.

Dear Jana and family, I only heard of Larry's passing now almost three years later. It has been too many years since we last met but I hold the memories precious. . You were both so generous in giving of yourselves to others. You loaned your car to my daughter and I when you returned to London on 2002/2003 so it would not sit unused, but I know you also thought of our need. Hank and I had a wonderful visit with you Jana and with Larry in London in summer 2003. We visited many of the special places you shared with us. I've missed you both Jana since you left the iSchool at Syracuse University. Hank died August 2010, but if he was here he would have shared in your sadness at losing Larry. Your lives were so woven together, and such a model of kindness and love you to others. I know how devastating a loss this must be. I hope your memories and those of family members have sustained you all. With blessings, Michelle

I am so sorry to hear of Larry's death. We were good friends all through high school, where he was a star of our class, and I saw him from time to time during our college years. He introduced me to William Styron, who became one of my favorite authors. My family and I visited Larry and Jana in London where they were spending the summer about 30 years ago. I hadn't seen him since then but my memories of him are indelible. My condolences to Jana, Rick and Steve.

I have only good memories of Larry. He was gentle, kind, perceptive, and intelligent. His sense of humor tended to be low key and understated.

That said, Larry was also willing to go along. I remember the photo in which he hammed it up with his brothers, with poker chips, playing cards, and $1000 bills from Brad and Marion, around their table in Phoenix!

I will pay my respects to Larry at his burial place, near our home. Sending best wishes to you, Johanna, as well as Rick and Steve!

Rick and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Jeffrey and I liked Larry from the first moment we met him. That is the kind of guy Larry was. You could tell that he was truly interested in you as a person. I hope that you will be comforted by the knowledge that he is at peace.

My "big brother" Larry passed away way too early. He was my mentor, my antagonist, my idol, my friend. I respected and admired him. He was accomplished in everything he undertook. He made time for anyone who came along with questions or interests. My friends all became friends of his as well. The last few years were difficult for all of us. He is now at peace. He will be so very missed by the rest of us.
