Robert Drew Obituary

TUSCALOOSA Robert Avon Drew, age 83, of Tuscaloosa, died Dec. 24, 2010. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. today at Christ Episcopal Church with the Reverend David Meginniss and the Reverend Dr. Catherine Collier officiating. The family will receive friends in Randall Hall following services at the church. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South is handling arrangements.

Mr. Drew was born April 27, 1927, in Birmingham. The family moved to Tuscaloosa in 1931, where he attended the public schools. He graduated from Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn. and the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

Mr. Drew served in the Navy in World War II and, after graduating from ROTC, served in the Army Reserve.

He attended Aetna Fire Insurance School in Hartford, Conn. and worked for Aetna as a special agent until 1956. He returned to Tuscaloosa as an insurance agent for Pritchett-Moore Inc., where he remained for 54 years.

Mr. Drew is preceded in death by his parents, Marion Darnley Drew and Harold Delbert Drew.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Atchison Drew; children, Elizabeth Drew Hope, Robert Avon Drew, Jr. (Jane), and Katherine Drew House (Jim); grandchildren, Lee Tyler Hope, Steven Alan Hope, Jr., Sarah Martin Drew, Emily Atchison Drew, Emmett James House, IV, and Olivia Drew House; sister, Polly Drew Jansen; and brother, Harold Delbert Drew, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Rd., Tuscaloosa, AL 35404; Christ Episcopal Church, 605 Lurleen Wallace Blvd N, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401; or the charity of one's choice.

Mr. Drew was a great friend to our Family, he was always interested in what was happening in my life as I grew up,and he always had that great smile. I remember well picking up coach with several of his buddies at the Chattanooga airport when they flew in to see Jackie Cummins play in the US Amateur. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Drew Family.

Betsy and Family, I am very sorry for the loss of your Dad. I remember him well, back when we were in school. I lost my mom and dad 25 years ago. We are never ready to let them go.
