Norman Singer Obituary

TUSCALOOSA - Norman J. Singer, age 78, of Tuscaloosa died on October 31, 2016. He was Professor Emeritus of Law and Anthropology at the University of Alabama, and for 40 years held full tenured professorships in both departments, though he was proud that he never took salary or benefits from Arts and Sciences.
Professor Singer had a wide-ranging international career as well. After graduating from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, he worked for a year in Stockholm. A trip through Russia and into Iran introduced him to the Middle East. He returned to the States, graduated summa cum laude from Boston University Law School and in 1964 and joined the Peace Corps with his wife, the former Bethany Wasserman. They spent four years in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where Professor Singer was a member of the first law faculty in Ethiopia and where two sons were born.
Prof. Singer joined the University of Alabama Law School in 1971 and in 1975 received the SJD from Harvard, with an anthropological/legal dissertation on traditional legal systems in Ethiopia.
While teaching full time at the University of Alabama, Professor Singer also fitted in numerous projects in countries as diverse as Albania, Cambodia, Croatia, Egypt, Fiji, Iraq, Trinidad, and Zanzibar. He became known as a major expert in restructuring land tenure in countries with poorly-organized or non-existent private land systems. He also took leave from the University to spend 1980-82 as the Ford Foundation Res. Rep. in the Sudan.
Professor Singer may be best known in the legal world as the author of a treatise, Sutherland, Statutory Construction. In recent years, he has shared authorship with his eldest son, Shambie J.D. Singer.
He was born in Boston, Mass. to the late Morris and Anna C. Singer. His first marriage ended in divorce.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Jacobs Singer; sons, Shambie, Jeremy (Nicole) and Micah (Ali); stepdaughters, Joanna Jacobs and Stephanie Jacobs; special children, Ejvis Lamani, and Anil and Aron Mujumdar; grandchildren, Sofia, Avery and Zeke Singer; and sister, Helen Silverstein.
There will be a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery on today, November 2, 2016 at 2 p.m. with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing.

I am saddened to read of Professor Singer's passing. Taking his torts courses and kibbitzing with him over minor points of the law was one of my greatest joys while a law student at Bama from '74 to '77, and he was very supportive of my decision to move to NYC after law school. I must admit to some amusement seeing him without a shaved head! It was very generously covered with his unruly crop during the years I knew him.
I am so very sorry for you loss. Sincerely, Tommy (George Thomas) Wilson

Our Condolences to Anna and the Singer family. Professor Singer was greatly dedicated to Ethiopia and we at the University of Warwick worked jointly with the University of Alabama for the development of legal education in Ethiopia. People in Ethiopia greatly appreciate his historic contribution to legal education.

Mrs. Singer and family,
Professor Singer was one of my favorite professors when I worked at the UA law school (Dean's Office, 2000-2005). So intelligent, colorful, always jovial and happy - he made everyone smile whenever he came around. It was a pleasure to see and talk with him. If only everyone could know a man like Norman Singer, the world would be a better place! I extend my condolences to you all.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Norris

In 1965, I was a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching English, at what was then called Haile Selassie I University, when Norman was on the law faculty. During that time he inspired me to study law. I lost contact with him, but never forgot how his good counsel put me on a gratifying lifelong career path. My condolences to his family and friends.

The the Singer Family: I send my thanks and appreciation for the privilege of knowing you. Shamble, I taught you in 4th grade and fondly remember how you always came in the classroom happy and with a smile on your face. You were an EXCELLENT student!! Your your desire for learning was a teacher's dream. Your mom frequented Verner quite often and I fondly remember her visits. Your family blessed my life. I just read of your dad's death and had I known about it sooner I would have been at the funeral.

Sincerely,
Joyce Blackburn

I am very sorry to hear of your family's loss. I have a fond memory of Dr. Singer speeding around town in a mini car that looked like a golf cart. A great man and a loss for our community too. Thinking of y'all during this difficult time.
