Connie and Family-

Thank you so much for sharing Jerry. He was such a great inspiration to me growing up and wanting to be a Police Officer. When I tell people that I am from Sleepy Eye, they ask, "from where?" I always respond, "the same place where Jerry Steffen is from." Everyone knew Jerry, he was a great man. My thoughts and prayers are with you, God bless.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Jerry’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with the Steffen family. I remember so well the Steffen’s living down the street from my family in Sleepy Eye. Playing multiple sports with Jerry through our 12 years at St. Mary’s, pickup games and recreational leagues during the spring, summer and fall. I remember Jerry’s drive to push himself to be the best he could be in every aspect of his life. I respected him then, and even more now. He was an inspiration, a leader and a great human being. May he rest in peace.

My late husband Charlie was the football coach at St. Mary's School when Jerry was playing sports. As I remember, he was a great athlete, and a wonderful, kind young man. My deepest sympathy, to Connie, and boys,to Frances and Paul and family.

Steffen Family,

Although I only had the opportunity to meet Jerry on a couple of occasions when he visited Sleepy Eye, he made a lasting impression on me. Wanting to pursue a career in law enforcement I was in awe of Jerry when I was told that he was a St. Paul Police Officer. I, like many others, were impressed with his size and strength. I always thought,"now that is what a cop should look like". After talking to him for a short time, I realized how genuine and friendly he truly was. He always had the time to talk to me about his job. Although I had not seen Jerry in years, he has made a lasting impact on me. He is someone that all police officers should aspire to be.

To the Steffen's,

I cannot begin to imagine the loss your family is going through. As tough as it was going to the funeral, many things brought a smile to my face, as well as others. The stories of Jerry are endless, and gets a chuckle out of everyone...but as we all witnessed, Jerry touched everyone's life that he met. Whether you met him once or a million times, you got the same dry sense of humor, compassion and care from Big Jer! He will be missed!

My thoughts and prayers to the Steffen family. Jerry was truly a remarkable man, and will be missed. I remember the guys always called him "the Hulk". But he was the kindest, most gentle man I have ever met. The SPPD is having quite the reunion in heaven! Lots of love to you.

We did not know Jerry, but Mark's brother and father were both St. Paul Police officers and I'm sure he will be missed.

Our Daughter, Casey and Son, Todd both have learned a great deal working with Scott and Tim on their hockey skills and after reading some of these memories of Jerry we now understand where Scott and Tim both get their love of helping kids

Scott and Tim, this is a very tough time in your lives, stay close to your family and always remember what great a person your father was and keep his memories close.

Our prayers go out to the Steffen Family.

When the Steffens moved in next door we weren't sure what to think. The family with kids who moved away were replaced by a young couple. I was scared of the man who made Charles Atlas look small. His voice boomed like the big man he was. Even with all those attributes, after talking with Jerry it wasn't hard for this 8yr old to realize he wasn't a threat, he was a good man.

Before long we would gather around him as he came home from work. Often we would talk, or he would wrestle with the 10 or so kids who so admired having the big cop as a neighbor. Never once did he tire of taking time to goof off, or talk with us kids, even after working all day himself. Never once were we able to pin him to the ground either.

We would also show up when Jerry and Connie undertook one of their many house projects. Helping out how we could, or just watching. I never thought one man could carry 8ft railroad ties, but Jerry made it look easy. How many stones, or wheelbarrow loads of dirt can one man handle? With Jerry it seemed infinite.

The stories about Jerry's goodness are too numerous, but suffice it to say he had a very positive impact on the many lives he touched.

Jerry was no doubt one of the best people I've known. It pains me greatly to hear of his departure, but my heart is also enlightened knowing Jerry is with god, and we will meet again. Our thoughts, prayers, go out to Connie, Scott, Tim, and the rest of the family. He will truly be missed by all of us.

Dear Connie and family,

Jerry was two years ahead of me at St Mary's in Sleepy Eye and had a very positive impact on my life. In sports, Jerry was always one to come around and help out the underclassmen. I followed Jerry to the University of St Thomas and served in the United States Marine Corps as well. I remember Jerry as an unassuming, unpretentious guy with tremendous character, integrity and leadership. He had a way of making the folks around him winners. He was definitely one of St Paul's finest. We are deeply saddened by his passing. Our prayers are with you and your familiy in this time of loss.

I was a Target Store manager at Midway,St,Paul for 8-1/2 years. Jerry worked Tuesday nites, which is the night that I closed, providing security at the Target store. Besides providing security for our employees and customers, he always presented a sense of good humor and professionalism of a St Paul police officer.. We had many conversations on all topics during those years. It was a pleasure to work with this man. My condolences to the Steffen family.

Most of the words describing Jerry have been said above, honest, faithful, trustworthy, knowing what was important and what was not. He made Saint Paul a better place, and those that worked with him better for it. He never lost sight of his priorities, and stuck to his guns on his values.

I can only imagine the hundreds of lives that have been influenced and inspired by Jerry. From high school, college, military and his professional career he was known as a tenacious competitor, but when the whistle blew a gentle a kind individual. Connie & boys, so sorry for your loss. Jerry will be missed by all of us who were inspired by this truly "good guy".

I first met Jerry Steffen at the Roseville Ice Arena in the Fall of 1990. My family had just moved to Minnesota from Colorado and our sons were trying out for the Pee Wee hockey team. I was sitting by myself in the bleachers when Jerry introduced himself to me. It was the first of many conversations that we had over the years as our sons played hockey and soccer together. My family and I have always regarded Jerry as one of the kindest, nicest most honorable men that we have ever known. His passing has saddened me very much. My deepest sympathies to Connie, Scott, Tim and your families. Jerry is going to make some fortunate person here on earth an amazing guardian angel...I hope it's me

Jerry will be greatly missed. I was interested in being a police officer when I got out of college in 1979 and rode with Jerry in St. Paul. Jerry is from my home town Sleepy Eye Minnesota and friends with my brother. Jerry was the reason I have had a successful career as a Dallas Police Officer. Jerry was also a hero at St. Mary's high school in Sleepy Eye. May God Bless Jerry Steffen

It has been a while since I saw Jerry at Como Northtown working security and longer still since I dispatched for him at SPPD. He was truly a joy to work with, I always knew it was his voice on the radio when he called in, and every contact I had with him whether at work or out in public was nothing less than positive. I know he will be missed by many. What a kind and decent man.

Steffen’s,

Jerry was like another father to me when I was younger. I always remember how big and strong he always was, and was always working out in his basement. Jerry was one of the most sincere, honest and good hearted persons I have ever met. If 1/2 this world had 1/2 of Jerry's big heart this world would be a better place because of it. Jerry was also one of the most positive people I have ever met; you never heard anything bad out of his mouth. Jerry worked very hard and had very high morals. Jerry could have taught children all around the world to be like him, he was what one person would call the perfect gentleman. I remember years ago when another officer on the force was shot and killed by a random person, it was one of Jerry's co workers. I remember how hurt Jerry was that he lost a friend and a co worker and the look in his eyes when he came home from work. I thought to my self this is one of the toughest, nicest persons I have ever met and he is really hurt from this and you could tell that he missed his co worker already. I guess to sum it up I have a feeling that like my self there will be a lot of others that feel the same way, that Jerry did that day today because of Jerry’s passing. Jerry you will always be in my heart and prayers and thank you for all of your positive support through out the years that I was privileged to know you. And believe me it was a privilege to MR Steffen.

Love Chad
