She went on to serve as President and lifelong member of the Former Queens Club, hosting the Queens Tea in her home for over 35 years. In 1948, Helen married Richard T. Murphy and became a "Proud Irish Mom." Her lifelong passion was baseball, starting when she was a little girl going to St. Paul Saints games at Lexington Park with her father. She was a passionate and devoted Twins and Yankees fan. Since 1961, she NEVER missed a Twins game on radio or TV! In 2000 she, along with her husband, commissioned and donated a bronze statue of St. Paul the Apostle to the Cathedral of St. Paul. Her generosity garnered her the 1989 Sal Labianco Winter Carnival Volunteer of the Year Award, the American Council of Catholic Women Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Catholic Defense League Couples Award. I am so sorry that I didn't get to say goodbye to Helen Duffy Murphy, my friend and the Queen of the Snows of 1947. I miss her, especially as another St. Paul Winter Carnival season rolls around. I could use her friendship and perspective as I write my annual story on the candidates for the position of the Queen of the Snows. I will think of Helen, as I always do, when I see that crown be placed on the next queen's head. It will sparkle, I am sure, just like Helen.

To the Murphy Family,
I consider it an honor to have known your mom/family. I lived just across the alley from the house on Summit and got to know your family well. I have fond memories of your mom and not more than a few years ago had a chance to revisit her and help her with some projects at her house. Everytime I drive past the house on Summit I have great memories of her and all of you. Especially PAT!!! My condolences to your family.
