Oh Shirley.
It´s been a few years since I´ve written you a message, though we talk regularly through my prayers and your signs from above. This year has been one that I have wished to have you and my mother near me more than any other. As Sammy and I walked through our attempts at parenthood, and finally the blessing of my first pregnancy, I felt your presence with me as I pictured what kind of mother I aspire to be. I knew you and my mom were there, giving me the strength I needed to feel confident to take this step forward with little guidance in the form of advice or encouragement. I channeled both of your grace and energy as I entered the O.R. to deliver my twin boys at only 32 weeks; I felt you both with me, in such a powerful way. I now navigate the most difficult challenge of my life thus far, grieving the passing of one of my twin boys several days after they were born while trying to be present for the joys of becoming a new mom with my other son who is still with us and thriving. I find myself crying out for a hug and some semblance of comfort hoping that perhaps my baby Stellar is now with you both, safely in the arms of my mother and my honorary grandma in the great beyond, the eternal oneness. I struggle to make sense of the why, wishing that things were different and angry at the universe for taking my son from me so soon. I miss our talks, your words of encouragement, our laughs. I miss watching you dig into your Louis for a crumpled up piece of cash after the end of a good meal. The way you nurtured your daughters with love, wisdom, and pushed them to their greatest potential will be my beacon as I aim to be the best mother I can for my son, Qwest. I love and miss you, Shirley. Give my mom & my baby a squeeze for me.
Love,
Melissa

Today I got an email about remembering Shirley. Honestly, I never need a reminder. I may not have known Shirley outside of the Larkin world but I have never met a more amazing woman. Knowing her backstory and how things started and everything she worked so hard to build is a legacy that will live on forever in every life that has been touched in any way by the Larkin world, if you're a dancer, a parent, a relative or friend who attended a recital...you have witnessed the Larkin way and I guarantee you were touched in ways you may never even know. I can't even count the number of recitals I cried at, probably all of them lol! When I was a child my friends were Larkin dancers and I was so jealous because I always wanted to be one but we could never afford it. When I had my own daughter the moment she was able to start, she did! Shirley was still very much involved and around when my daughter was young and there were times we needed help and she never even gave it a thought...shoes, tights, leos that were needed in that moment but we needed to wait for payday sometimes being young parents and it was never an issue. She gave so much love through so many things and I just hope she knows that those moments are what made me see her halo.

Grandma,
I wish I could go back to the old days where I would get phone calls from you on a weekly basis just wondering how I was doing. If I could talk to you on the phone right now I would have so much to tell you. College is great. Its scary being away from home. I even decided to pledge a sorority. I'm not sure which sorority I am going to be in, but one of the sororities philanthropy is fundraising for alzheimer's and finding a cure. They showed us a video on the statistics of alzheimer's and I cried in front of everybody. Before I found out you were diagnosed with this horrible disease, I had never heard of it before. Now that I lost you to this disease, I have been trying to get as involved as possible. I managed to raise $5,000 dollars by myself in the past year and even participated in the walk to end Alzheimer's. It is truly something that has motivated me to get involved in community service more than ever. I know you would be so proud. I think about you every day. Especially because I wish I had you here to guide me in the right direction like you always used to. I know I could always go to you not only for honesty, but advice and encouragement. You always pushed me to go for my dreams. Especially when I worked in the city. You were the first person to brag about my singing and acting to everyone and I will never forget when you used to make me sing in front of all of your friends. But once again, I just wish I could hear your voice. All I have is videos, pictures, and memories that just aren't enough. I miss you Grandma. Those six months I was able to spend with you in New Jersey were six months of my life that I will cherish and hold onto forever. I know you will give me strength and guidance in my decision making throughout my entire life. I love you more every day.
Love always,
Lacey

Blessings to the Larkin family. You have put Minnesota on the map as a force to be reckoned with, in the area of dance, throughout the state and nationally. I've been told there will be a tribute to your beloved Shirley, on an upcoming episode of the popular tv show "Dancing With The Stars". I'm looking forward to it. As a passionate dancer myself and lover of the arts.... Much respect, -Rita (St. Paul)

I was very sad to see in the White Bear Press that Shirley Larkin had passed away. I took dance from Shirley when she was still teaching out of her home in Mahtomedi. Shirley was a great tap dancer and would lead the lesson with her tap shoes on showing you the moves she expected you to follow. I came to Shirley I believe my parents Stan and Mary Burda knew Russell and Shirley so it only made sense for me to take dance from a well known teacher and friend. I have not seen Shirley in years, I know she will be grealy missed by many...

We just returned from a family vacation and were so saddened to hear of Shirley's passing. There are so many wonderful memories of my daughter's years at Larkin and all the fun times working on costumes, etc. Recently, she sent me a note and I was so surprised she remembered me since it's been many years since my daughter's graduation. She will be greatly missed by all. My deepest sympathy to Molly, Michelle, Patti, Mary Kay, Kelley and Nancy and all the family.

To know Shirley Larkin was to know strength, passion, love, commitment, dedication, self-confidence, beauty and devotion beyond belief. Shirley instilled these very attributes in her own girls, and those who were lucky enough to call themselves "children of Shirely"...for all of her students were not just part of a studio, but loved as a family member. You can spot a "Larkin Dancer" by the way they move, by their carriage, and by their confidence. That is the gift Shirley has given them. To have known her was one of God's greatest blessings. We love you Shirley. Thank you for showing us the "Larkin Way". And thank you Michele, Molly, Kelly and MaryKay for carrying on your mom's legacy. To all of the Larkin Family, our thank you's and condolences as well.
With All of Our Love and Sympathy

My deepest sympathy to the Larkin Family. I danced with Larkin for 12 years, and it made a huge impact on the adult I have become. Something that I will always remember about Shirley and the "Larkin Culture" is how generous she was / they are. Shirley truly embodied the verse "praise his name with dancing". May your family find comfort in her legacy & each other during this difficult time.

Mary Kay, Molly, and Michele,
I know no one needs to tell you what a special, influential woman your mom was, but there are so many out there right now thinking those very thoughts. She fitted me for my first pair of dance shoes at age three and handed out suckers and a smile to my own daughter when she started dance at three. She was an inspiration to women and dancers everywhere.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you...
Shirley was an inspiration to so many people-not just her dancers! Besides all the amazing things she that did for the dance community and for the families from the studio what I remember best was how she would come and talk politics with me! She had been active for years when I met her in 2008 and she sure knew what she was talking about! She was a hoot and reminded me of my own grandmother.
I pray that you savor each memory that you have of her and that you find strength in the knowledge that you had such an amazing women as your mother.
Sincerely,

Mary Kay, Patty, Michele, Nancy, Kelley, Molly and Families,
My heart aches for all of you for your loss.
Your mother was an amazing and strong woman who inspired generations of young women. She was ahead of her time and her legacy is far reaching.
It cannot go without saying that her legacy includes the creation of the very first Mahtomedi Girls Gymnastic team developed in your family's home studio...your mom was our coach and we would not have been the team we were in those days without having first been coached by your mom...stretching (with pointed toes!) and tumbling/acrobatics (with pointed toes!) during dance class on those little black mats! We are all the better for having been touched by her--A Great Woman indeed.
May God Bless you all through this very difficult time.
With love,

There are so many thoughts that come to mind when thinking about Shirley. I have been so blessed to have had the opportunity to see her for many years. I could always count on a smile from her everytime she entered a room. That smile in turn made me smile and forget about everything else that might have been going on at the time. When we talked she was always honest and supportive. I knew that she cared and she always took the time to listen and encourage me. Mrs. Larkin thank you for all of your contributions during your life on this earth and for touching the lives of so many. Your rewards are now in heaven. The wonderful memories with family and friends will always be remembered. As your family mourns, may those times of joy and happiness bring them peace. You gave of yourself to make a difference in the lives of others and those gifts will forever be appreciated. My thoughts and prayers are with the Larkin Family.

One of the funniest moments I had during a dance recital is also one of my best memories of Mrs. Larkin. I had a no number change from one costume to another. I made it on time with my group the music started and the next thing I know I realized that my costume was on backwards, my tail was flopping around in the front of my lion costume. I lost it with laughter and so did the girls around me once they noticed it. My position was in the front row at the end. When I looked off stage there was Shirley, laughing but at the same time encouraging me to keep going. Afterwards she complemented me on a great job, and said that was one of my best performances.
I am honored to have known you Mrs. Larkin. Thank you for all your words of wisdom and love.

Now I realize that I was learning to be strong, graceful, set goals, achieve goals, enjoy the moment and so many more things beyond just dancing. Thank you for the dancing, dinners, competitions, and sleep-overs. Most of all, thank you for showing me how to be graceful outside of the classroom.

shirley- you are, in all meanings of the word, my grandma. you were the only one who went up to bat for me every time I got myself into trouble, like a true grandma would! You were my mom's best and truest friend and Perkins date every morning, where I would go to skip first hour and talk with the "Golden Girls"- Barb, Lynne and Shirls. You opened your home to me- my first Mahtomedi residence-just to get me into the district! You were never-ending in your giving. The black and white room was my crash pad before Chicago conventions. You were the first one in my life to call me your "jewish princess." And even when times were tough in my move out to LA, you were the first one to tell me you believed in me. You were the first person I called when I booked my first job with Wayne and Cirque! And you are the first person I think about when I say I am a dancer. You opened your studio, your love and dedication to dance, and most importantly your heart to me and I am so grateful to have shared so many moments with you. Your legacy stirs up so many cherished memories in my heart, and so many laughs that although this is a painful moment, I have to smile when I think of you! Your voice answering the phone "dance studio!" Or your obsession with animal print! Your refusal to have a cell phone! The way we rhinestoned everything that was possibly rhinestone-able! You were never scared to tell it like it was! and I wanted to be just like you. Still do. You are such a precious influence on the woman I have grown to be. and I appreciate how great of friend you were to my mom, through many tough times. And you always gave me the benefit of the doubt, always made me feel important and valued, and even when i acted a fool, you were still there supporting me. You spoiled me with your love, light, compassion, generosity, kindness, and honesty and these and certainly your dry humor and sarcasm will live on through me and the rest of the Larkin children forever. I love you Shirley, and I miss you already. You will always be my guiding angel and inspiration. every step I take on stage is for you. Rest in peace, until we meet again. hugs and kisses, Melis

My heart goes out to all of you girls and your families. Shirley was such an awesome woman and touched the lives of so many. She and my mom, Terry, knew each other back when they were young and taking dance lessons, I believe...and were re-aquainted when my daughters started lessons at your studio. I know they had some fun times together....went to church at Redeeming Love a few times even. My mother passed 3 years ago...and Shirley was there to show her support to us at that time. It meant a lot to me. I'm sure the two of them will be visiting again, soon :) God Bless you all and may God hold you in His arms and comfort you at this difficult time of loss~

I can't begin to tell you how influential Shirley Larkin and the instructors at Larkin Dance Studio have been in the life of my daughter, Rachel Brenna. You have all molded her into the wonderful young woman she is today and I know she will carry that into her adult life. Our hearts are saddened beyond words at Shirley's passing, and our love and prayers go out to the Larkin Family. May your memories of Shirley sustain you in your grief and may her love for you keep you strong. I have no doubt that Shirley dances on Heaven's streets of gold today .... God bless!

On my first day of dance as a seven-year-old, Shirley brought me to a rack of dance clothes and asked me if I wanted a regular leotard or "a snazzy one, like the big girls wear." In ways big and small, she helped so many people go after what really made them happy. Many thanks to her and to the Larkin family for a lifelong love of dance. My thoughts and prayers now as you remember the things about her that make you happy. God bless.

All my love and thoughts are with the Larkin family and friends. Shirley was a true legend and she will be dearly missed. My favorite memory of her has always been sitting in the seats watching rehearsal and listening to her talk about how beautiful all the girls were. My daughter has been blessed to be a part of the Larkin family of dance for 10 years and we have loved every minute of it. <3

During the 15 years my daughters and I danced at Larkin Dance Studio, you could always count on the strong presence of Mrs. Larkin. She was always at the studio, she never missed a competition, and was always there to greet each dancer at the entrance to the auditorium or backstage during the recitals. Her presence demonstrated the love and dedication she had for all of us. It won’t be the same without her, but we all know she’ll be there in spirit. Over the years, the Larkins transformed our sons and daughters into the beautiful young men and women they are today. They were taught a great love of the arts, especially dance and music, they were taught self-discipline, honor and respect, and because of the time they spent at Larkin Dance Studio, they improved the quality of their adult lives by staying out of trouble, going to college or continuing to dance professionally. The enrichment they received from dance will stay with them throughout their entire lives. We are all honored to have known Mrs. Larkin and we know she is smiling down on us now.
All of our prayers and love to the Larkin family,
Maureen, Danielle and Brittani Bartone, and the entire Bartone family.

Shirley and family: It's hard to believe I can't stop in and say hi or have lunch,I have to wait till we meet together with the lord. We shared such sweet times. A great loss to you her family but you can be comforted by the fact that she is dancing on streets that are golden. Won't it be with great joy. The way she loved to dance. She taught 5 of my 8 daughters and now her daughters are teaching my granddaughter. She was a lady of much talent and great faith which we shared with joy.

Dear Larkin Family,
I was one of Shirley's first students, starting my dance and life lessons in 1950. I continued taking lessons through my senior year in high school in 1965. Shirley had confidence in me to allow me to fill in and teach her students while she took off a few days to give birth to one of her beloved daughters. Shirley's influence also prompted me to have my own dance studio in North St Paul for 8 years.
Like with many people, Shirley was a second mom to me. I fondly remember the trips to Chicago for NADAA conventions and the Sunday trips to the Leamington Hotel in Mpls for more dancing experiences and education. I can still hear Shirley saying to me, " Phyllis, keep those arms up!"
To the Larkin girls - I lost my mom to Cancer and Alzheimers 3 years ago and I know the pain that you are feeling. Your mom is at peace now and she'll have my mom, Helen, to talk to in Heaven
Shirley was truly an amazing woman, mother, mentor and friend and she will be missed and thought of forever.

Dearest Larkin Family-
Shirley was the woman I wanted to grow up to be at age 5 when I began my love affair with dance at the Hickory Street basement studio. She has inspired generations of kids to express themselves through dance and I am forever grateful for her gift! I am certain that she has joined the Heavenly Chorus Line as their lead dancer and is teaching everyone all the dance steps that keep all of us- who were blessed to have Shirley touch our hearts-tapping forever! I hope all of you will take comfort in knowing that Shirley was larger than life and made the world a better place by sharing her amazing talent and love for life with so many! She is a National Treasure and will live on in all of us who had the honor to be in her shadow! love to all of you!
