Roger MAGNUSON Obituary

Age 68 ~ Of Mahtomedi, MN went home to be with the Lord on November 30, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with cancer. Roger was a follower of Jesus Christ, and pastor of Straitgate Church, a ministry Roger founded to meet the needs of inner-city Minneapolis families. Roger was also a trial attorney and partner at Dorsey and Whitney. He represented the Florida Senate in the Bush v. Gore case, and was involved in numerous other high-profile cases throughout his prolific career. Roger founded the Oak Brook School of Law and Government Policy, and served as its Dean until his passing. Roger was the author of several influential books on law and culture. Roger loved sports, sailing, running, golfing, and laughing, but most of all, he loved his family, and he loved his Savior. Roger was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Ruth Magnuson, his brothers Roy and Warren, and his sister Janet. He is survived by his wife Betsy, his children James, Peter (Tabitha), Kerstin, Sarah Van Sistine (Luke), Libby, Anna, Jed, and Britta, and his grandson Lars Roger, and his sisters Marty Quam and Ruth Whitcomb (Rollie). Visitation will take place from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, December 6, and the funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, both at Straitgate Church, Park and Franklin, Mpls. Remembering a very kind clever and chivalrous young man I met at a Swedish language course in Lund, Sweden in the summer of 1972. He was an obvious leader even then and looked after our little multinational group of Germans, English and Americans in a grave and kindly way. He went on from Sweden to Poland to evangelise. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

We were so very sorry to learn of Roger's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the family in their time of loss. May God's strength and peace sustain you in the days ahead. With sincere condolences,

I never met this dear Godly man, but I felt like he was a friend when I ever listened to him on Embassy institute. He has inspired me and challenged me so much! I am saddened that he has passed away, but we will all see him soon. He will continue to be a Father, Pastor, teacher in my life and whatever I have learned through him I will also pass on to my four children and wife. I am praying for the Magnuson family.

Pastor Magnuson was a great inspiration to our family as he was so diligent to minister to families in the inner city. He was one of the most influential men in my life - almost like a father figure or older brother. We will greatly miss him and we have Betsy and family in our prayers.

Our hearts are deeply grieved with the news of Mr. Magnuson's passing. His powerful messages at the yearly ATI conferences made a profound impact on my life as a child and teen, and influenced my decisions in a positive direction. In large part because of his example, I made the decision to memorize the New Testament myself, a project which has changed my life for eternity and has been the single most beneficial decision of my life. God used Mr. Magnuson's messages and sermons to help my family and me many times over the years; he was so brilliant, humorous, Biblically sound, witty, and powerfully persuasive; one of our all-time favorite speakers. He was beloved by many families like ours, and will be deeply missed. What a gift of God he was to this world; what a loss. My mind can hardly accept as true this stinging, heartbreaking news; I can't hold back the tears as I write this. The only comfort I can find is the knowledge that he is in the Presence of the Lord Jesus and because Jesus has defeated the grave, death has lost its victory and one day all those who have trusted in Christ will be reunited in the glories of heaven. I thank God for allowing me to sit under the teaching of such a Godly man and for the influence he had on my life. "He was a burning and a shining light..." (John 5:35a) My family's prayers go out to his family; may the God of all comfort give to you the comfort that only He could give in the midst of such a loss.

Betsy, My heart goes out to you and your family upon the recent loss of Roger. Although I never knew the private side of Roger, I am very happy to read the tributes to him and learn of his love of our Savior.

December 6, 2013

I am mourn the passing of this dear friend, partner and mentor. For 15 years, I have been honored to both figuratively and literally carry his briefcase into countless courtrooms from New York to Los Angeles and second chair many hearings, trials and oral arguments. He has taught me almost everything I know about being a lawyer as well as providing an outstanding example of a comitted Christian, devoted husband and father. I will miss his extraordinary trial skills and amazing sense of humor. Several times each week we talked about our cases and litigation strategy and in almost every conversation he said something that made me laugh. I will miss him a great deal but the impact he has made on my life will continue.

Betsy and family. I have not seen or heard from Roger since graduating with him from high school in 1963. He helped me out quiet a lot with my Algebra. He lived just around the corner from my parents store in St. Paul. He was a wonderful person then as he was through out his life. I often would tell people of his kindness with others as well as me. May God Bless you and your family through out this difficult time. Bonnie Rauscher (Jones)

I've known Roger since childhood, growing up at First Evangelical Free in St. Paul and graduating from Johnson High School. It didn't take long for us to see that Roger was a unique person with very special gifts and abilities. He leaves a great legacy and also a great hole in the lives of his family. May God give you strength and comfort in the days ahead.

Many are thanking God today for what He has done in their lives through His servant Roger Magnuson. A man greatly gifted both naturally and spiritually, he left a great impact for good in the lives of thousands and in the political, cultural, and professional life of his country. A few weeks ago I heard a friend of his speak words of encouragement to our very-ill friend and call him "a piece of work." What a piece of work Roger Magnuson was! And the Craftsman that made him what he was the Savior of the world. It is written that "we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works." May God continue to bless His lifework, his family, and the wonderful Straitgate Church of Minneapolis!

Fortunately we have much with which and for which to remember Roger. His works and accomplishments will keep us good company for a long while—serving to remind us of the wonderfully eloquent man, mind and soul we were lucky to know and wish didn't have to go. The future will miss his brilliance and guide, but will be forever graced for his having been. I will miss his brilliance and guide; I will miss him. :(

Grateful for a man who never knew me but who inspired me by his word and example to memorize chapters and books of God's Word. I'll long remember the many Straitgate sermons I've enjoyed from the web site with characteristic humor and insight. I join your family in thanking God for a life well lived and for finishing well with a legacy fit for eternity.

Yes, Roger was an extremely gifted person in so many, many ways. But his greatest gift was his ability to call people to Jesus the Christ, to commit to Him, and to live lives filled/directed by Him. He is the most influential person in my life. He led me to commit my life to Jesus Christ as LORD as well as Savior and that changed my life forever after. Betsy and the children are blessed to have had him in their lives every day. Thank you, Lord, for his life, his example, his Bible teaching, and his putting You uppermost in all.

"And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." Deut. 6:5

Pastor lived out that verse to the fullest. I am thankful he took the time to invest into me as a man. He walked my most trying time with me faithfully by my side. He was a gifted teacher, speaker and mentor. His footprint will be long lasting, as he trained countless disciples of Christ to live out Deuteronomy 6:5 to the fullest. Thank you for your investment into me, and because of that investment I can say with all surety I will see you again in Heaven.

Roger was a joy and an inspiration to me personally and so many others. He was unashamed of the gospel, completely unpretentious, genuine and humble despite his vast list of accomplishments. He always brings it back to Jesus! Roger was a man who invested in the only place that matters eternally.

A bright mind with a humble heart. A dear friend of many years that me and my family will miss greatly. He is now with Christ whom he served faithfully for so long. He impacted our lives so much. Amid his accomplishments he remained a humble leader. I will always remember him as the most intelligent person I've met. He was always ready to speak about anything in a flash and in everything he found a way to include the Gospel. Always inspirational, positive, uplifting, humble and encouraging to everyone from the national leaders to the poor on the street. He will always hold a special place in my heart.
