Louis J. Goodman

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Louis John Goodman, 89, died June 7, 2011.

He was born July 9, 1921, in Enfield, N.H., the seventh of 13 children of Anna and Benjamin Goodman.

He devoted his life to his education and the education of others. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1939 as class valedictorian, then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. He was wounded in action in the Marshall Islands and was a decorated war veteran. He graduated from MIT and Harvard with high honors and degrees in the field of civil engineering.

He taught at both Ohio State and Lehigh Universities before coming to Syracuse University in 1954. During his tenure in Syracuse, Professor Goodman had an active consulting practice that specialized in sub-soil investigations.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Blomquist Goodman. He is survived by his wife Phyllis of West Palm Beach; two sons, Jack of Syracuse, N.Y., and Peter of Halifax, Nova Scotia; a stepson, Jim of Doylestown, Pa.; brothers Joseph of Nashua, N.H., and Richard of Hampton, N.H.; sisters Lillian of Shrewsbury, Mass., and Betty of Boynton Beach, Fla.; many nieces and nephews.

IN HIS LIFE: Professor Goodman left Syracuse for an assignment in the Philippine Islands as a Fulbright professor and founded the School of Engineering at Mindanao State University.

In 1972 he was appointed acting director of the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, a position he held for 11 years. In August 1976, Professor Goodman received an honorary Ph.D. from Yeungnam University in Korea.

Professor Goodman retired after 45 years of work in the area of civil engineering, having authored and co-authored over 70 research and technical articles in numerous national and international journals and conference proceedings.

During his career, he lectured throughout Europe, South America and Africa (Cairo, Egypt).

Family members also include five grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexis, Jessica, Shannon, and Rebecca.
