Roland Genest Obituary

NASHUA - Roland "Gus" Genest, 90, died peacefully Nov. 14, 2011, at his home at Aynsley Place, surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born in Manchester on May 4, 1921, to the late Lucien and Rosa (Poisson) Genest. Educated in Manchester schools, Mr. Genest was a graduate of St. Joseph High School, class of 1939.

Gus was the loving husband of the late Janette (Jean) Genest, who died in March 1987. They were married in 1951 and shared 36 years together.

A World War II Army veteran, he served in North Africa and Italy from August 1942 to October 1945.

Gus was employed by the Department of Defense for more than 35 years, beginning his career at Grenier Field in Manchester and retiring from Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Mass.

A resident of Nashua since 1959, Gus was a 40-year devoted communicant of the Parish of the Resurrection. He was an active volunteer of the church and was a loyal supporter and volunteer at the Corpus Christi Food Pantry.

Gus was an avid sportsman; he enjoyed golf, cards, bowling, tennis and semi-pro baseball. He was a member of many organizations and held active memberships in the National Association of Retired Federal and Current Employees, Chapter 1540; the Knights of Columbus Council 11573 and the American Legion Sweeney Post 2, both of Manchester.

Family members include his son, Stephen D. Genest and his wife, Luane, of Nashua; three grandsons, Corey Genest and his wife, Kelley, of Nashua, Gregory Genest and his wife, Jackie, of Wilder, Vt., and Timothy Genest of Nashua; his brother, the Rev. Gilles Genest of Fall River, Mass.; three sisters-in-law, Eloise Genest of Manchester, Georgette Jean of Feeding Hills, Mass., and Marie Jean of Manchester; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Gus was predeceased by a brother, Fernand Genest of Manchester.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Farwell Funeral Home, 18 Lock St., Nashua. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in the Parish of The Resurrection, 449 Broad St., Nashua, Thursday at 10 a.m. Everyone is invited to gather at the church. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Corpus Christi Food Pantry, 43 Franklin St., Nashua 03060.

Arrangements are in the care of the Farwell Funeral Service.
