Addison Carver Obituary

RAYMOND - Addison "Reed" Carver, 84, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Jan. 10, 2013, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua.

Reed was born in Raymond on Sept. 20, 1928, the youngest child of Jessie Ruth (Cockerline) and Arthur Carver. He lived in Raymond for 83 years before moving to Mont Vernon in 2012 to be closer to his children and grandchildren.

Reed served in the U.S. Navy as a yeoman second class from 1946-49, and was stationed on the islands of Truk and Guam. Following his honorable discharge from the service, he attended the University of New Hampshire where he received a B.A. in sociology in 1953 and a master's in sociology in 1954. He also received a master's degree in social work at Boston University in 1962.

While attending college, Reed went to work for the Manchester Family Service Society as a case worker. He spent countless hours counseling and advocating for children, couples and families. He served on numerous city and state committees. After 38 years, he retired in 1993 as the regional director of Child and Family Services of New Hampshire.

Throughout his many years of public service, Reed touched thousands of lives and received the NASW Social Worker of the Year Award in 1982, the City Missionary Award in 1985, and upon his retirement was awarded the Key to the City of Manchester and a commendation from then-Gov. Stephen E. Merrill.

Reed is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maxine (Brown) Carver, and children Carlene McCarty, husband William, Bruce Carver, wife Eileen, Allison Schmidlein, husband Kevin, and Heather Carver, husband Roger Seacole. Reed had 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, whom he adored.

Reed was predeceased by his daughter, Valerie Leonard, and her husband, Daniel; and his siblings, Donald Carver, Audrey Sewall and Frank Ostrander.
