Donald Burrill Obituary

TILTON - Donald Fay Burrill, 83, passed away Jan. 10, 2016. He was born in Nashua on Dec. 7, 1932, a son of L. Fay and Elizabeth (Melendy) Burrill. Don grew up and attended grade school in Bedford and graduated from Manchester High School West, Class of 1950. He attended Yale University on a full scholarship, graduating with a degree in chemical engineering in 1954. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955 and was stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey, Calif. Don received his Ph.D. from Cornell University. He was a professor of statistics and educational research at the University of Toronto, Canada, from 1976 to his retirement in 1996. He returned to Bedford and was an adjunct professor at various times at Plymouth State and St. Anselm Colleges. Don moved to the New Hampshire Veterans Home in 2013. He had played organ for numerous churches in the greater Manchester area, Amherst, Chester and Litchfield. Don was a pianist for the Elliot Hospital Voluntaires Chorus, a member of the Manchester Choral Society and Orpheus Choir in Toronto, a member of MENSA, and the Bedford Historical Society. He enjoyed reading, cryptic crossword puzzles, chess, square dancing, folk dancing and was certified to teach Scottish dancing. Don had traveled to China and throughout Canada and the United States. While on sabbatical from the University of Toronto he lived in England and Australia.Don is survived by two children, daughter Amy Sevier and husband Tim and their children, Martine and William, and son Peter Burrill, all of Toronto; two sisters, Barbara Moulton and husband Stanley of Alton and Janet Dunham of Annapolis, Md.; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

I remember Don as our organist/choir director at the Chester Congregational Baptist Church. I appreciated his playing and the kind of music he chose for us to sing. I liked the twinkle in his eye.
