Gilbert A. Strong, Sr., 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 24, 2014, at Faxton-St. Lukes Healthcare Center, with his family at his side. He was born on November 3, 1929, in Knoxboro, the son of the late Herbert and Adelaide VanEvra Strong. Gil was a graduate of Madison High School. He had proudly served his Country in the Army during the Korean War. On July 3, 1954, in North Bay, Gil married Shirley Hilliker. He retired from Eastern Rock where he had worked many years as a Weigh Master. Gil was a 57 year member of the Oriskany Falls Kelly-Phillips, Post 569, and a life member of the Clinton VFW, Post 9591. He had served as Town Justice for the Town of Augusta, on the School Board of the former Oriskany Falls High School, and on the Board of Directors of the Hillside Cemetery Association. Gil was a member of the Oriskany Falls United Methodist Church. He will be remembered as a devoted husband who loved his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley; his beloved children, Gilbert A. Butch Strong, Jr., and his wife, Patricia, of Deansboro, Karen Diliberto, of Macedon, and William Strong, and his wife, Diane, of Madison; his sisters, Kay Konono, of Rome, and Barbara (Lewis) Mennig, of Munnsville; his brothers, LaVern Strong, of Canastota, Guilford (June) Strong, of Mt. Juliet, TN, Warner (Mary) Strong, of Interlachen, FL, William (Judy) Strong, of Knoxboro, and Robert (Lori) Strong, of Oneida; his beloved grandchildren, Andrea, Jeremy, Amanda, Amy, Lisa, Jennifer, Kerry, Kristi, and Kimberly. Gil is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Connor, Luke, Rylan, Stephen, Kyle, Spencer, Bianna, Faith, Steven, Blake, and Braelynn, and twin boys Jayden and Payson, due in December; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members. Gil was predeceased by his brothers; Charles, Keith, Carlton, Theodore, David, Robert Gary, and Dickey; his sister Phyllis and a great grandson, Noah. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 1 PM, at the Oriskany Falls United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Becky Parry, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Hillside Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Paul Funeral Home of Madison.
