Gerald W. Jerry Furner, 87, of E. Bacon St., passed away Thursday April 4, 2013 at the Harding Nursing Home. He was born on April 10, 1925 on the family farm in North Brookfield, a son of Frank, Jr. and Margaret Riedman Furner. The family moved to Waterville in 1928 where he attended local schools. In November 1942, Jerry joined the U.S. Navy. Following completion of Mine Sweeping School in Virginia, he served on the minesweeper USS YMS-403 in the North Atlantic and the South Pacific until his discharge in 1946. On July 20, 1957, he married Catherine M. Duquette in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Utica. Their loving union lasted 54 years until she predeceased him on July 27, 2011. Jerry was a carpenter with the Construction Carpenters Union for over 30 years, retiring in 1987. He had previously worked for the railroad maintaining tracks for 3 years. He was devoted Dad and Grandpa who treasured the times spent with his family. He also enjoyed beekeeping. Jerry was a communicant of St. Bernards Church in Waterville. He was a member of the Clifford J. Fulmer American Legion Post #92. Surviving are his children, James and Dale Furner, of Waterville; Michelle and Jeff Klingensmith, of Sauquoit; Diane Furner, of Waterville; Joseph Furner, of Lake Worth, FL; Gerald Furner, of Mitchellville, MD; Suzanne and Howard Crawford, of Waterville; John and Diana Furner, of Sauquoit; a brother, Fred Furner, of Kissimmee, FL; sister-in-law, Rocella Furner, of Waterville; eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Josephine Bugbee and Betty Jones; and three brothers, Charles, Ed and Walt Furner. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 AM from the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St. Waterville and at 11:00 AM from St. Bernards Church, Stafford Ave., Waterville where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment with Military Honors will be held at a later date in St. Bernards Cemetery, Waterville. Friends are invited and may call on Sunday from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home.
