Richard "Dick" Pettengill
Conway, SC/Ilion, NY
Richard A. Pettengill, 75, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2011, in Conway, SC, at the home of his daughter. Until 2 months ago, he lived at Prindle Apts. in Ilion. Dick was born January 14, 1936, to the late Harriette Buckley Pettengill and the late Raymond Pettengill, Sr. He was of the Catholic faith. Dick served in the Naval Reserve from January 1953 until January 1961. "Tricky Dick" spent 35 years as a horse trainer and owner at the Finger Lakes Race Track. In his younger years, he was an equestrian rider and raced cars and motorcycles locally. Dick was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He enjoyed being with his buddies Grant Bouck, Tom Goodale, Dave Hecox, Ed McMahon and many others. Survivors include three daughters, Donna Hale, of Winter Park, FL, Diane (Scot) Hence, of Conway, SC, and Lori (Bill) Doudry, of Winter Haven, FL; three sons, Keith (Janet) Pettengill, of Rome, NY, Richard (Trina) Pettengill, of Ilion, NY, and Russell (Heidi) Pettengill, of Conway, SC; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several loving nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by a brother, Alan (Sharon) Pettengill, of Herkimer, NY; a sister, Betty Casadonte, of Mohawk, NY; and a sister-in-law, Jennie Pettengill, of Ilion, NY. He also leaves behind his former wives, Elaine Applegate Pettengill and Becky (Chuck) Acre. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Raymond Pettengill, Jr. There are no calling hours. His cremation will take place in SC. The family will hold a memorial service at a date and time to be announced. In Dick's memory, contributions can be made to the Herkimer County Humane Society, Mohawk, NY. Online memorials can be placed at [email protected].
