Rose Maggiolino Obituary

Mrs. Rose Maggiolino
Utica, NY
Mrs. Rose M. (DeTraglia) Maggiolino, 92, passed away peacefully with her beloved family by her side on Thursday, November 22, 2012, at the Siegenthaler Center of Hospice & Palliative Care. Rose was born in Utica on September 12, 1920, a daughter of Louis and Grace (Marrotta) DeTraglia. She was educated in local schools, a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School, and an alumnus of St. Elizabeth School of Nursing, where she received her RN. On June 8, 1946, Rose was joined in marriage to Maurice Morris F. Maggiolino at St. Anthony Padua Church. They enjoyed over thirty-seven loving years together until his death on August 29, 1983. Rose was employed with the City of Utica Public Health Department and later the Oneida County Health Department. She continued her career as District Director of the State of NY Department of Public Health for over twenty-eight years. She was also very instrumental in establishing the public health department in Herkimer County. During her work career, Rose attended Syracuse University where she received a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. She was a member of the NYS Nurses Association, where she was a very active member and also volunteered as a member of the Utilization Review Committee for the Mohawk Valley. Rose was a member of the Oneida County Democratic Womans Assoc. and the Sons of Italy. Although she worked full time, Rose was fully attentive to not only her husband, children, and grandchildren, but also her extended family of in-laws, nieces and nephews. In earlier years, she enjoyed spending time with her family in Caroga Lake and in later years, Cape Cod, where she formed some much cherished memories. She was an especially doting grandma to her grandson, Chris, for whom she was always there. She will truly be missed. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Maurice Butch P. and Janet Maggiolino, of Clay; and her daughter, RoAnn M. Destito, of Rome; grandchildren, Kristyn and Christian Powell, of CA, Aimi and Mark Grysko, of N. Syracuse, Maurice Philip Maggiolino and fiancee, Mandy, of Hawaii, Jon Michael Maggiolino and Christopher Destito, Jr., both of Rome; three great-grandchildren, Spencer and Jackson Powell, and Sophia Rose Grysko; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bernie and Antoinette Toni Turi; many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, that she loved like her own children; and also her lifelong friends, Benita Be Denemark and Victoria Balzano. She was predeceased by her brothers and a sister-in-law, Anthony J. DeTraglia, Philip N. and Angeline DeTraglia, and Louis and Frank DeTraglia; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Rita and Samuel Talarico, two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Mary DeTraglia, Madge and Walter Eddington, and Frank Maggiolino; her beloved son-in-law, Christopher P. Destito; and her close family friend, Hank Balzano. Her funeral will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. from The Matt Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica. The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Fred Talarico and Patricia Rosati, PNP; the staff of ICU, Neuro-Peds and 3-B of St. Elizabeth Medical Center; and the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care and the Siegenthaler Center, all for their loving care of Rose during her illness. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Rose please consider donations to either Hospice & Palliative Care & the Siegenthaler Center or to the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing to establish a scholarship fund in her memory. Dear RoAnn,
I'm sorry at your Mother's passing and more so that I was not in town to bid my last farewell. I knew her pretty well as I used to see her downtown at lunchtime and chatted with her. Many times I saw her having lunch with her sister and thought that was pretty nice, and we chatted. I also talked about the nice daughter she had raised and the fact that she should visit the hometown where her parents and I came from. We had a nice relationship and I miss her. She is now at rest. May her soul rest in peace forever knowing that she has lived a good life on earth and deserves the best in heaven. Again I regret that I was unable to say a prayer in her presence. Please accept our heartfelt condolences and our prayers. I also want to thank you for being such a great person and friend yourself.
Sincerely, Frank Bonacci

Rose was a "character". She was our backyard neighbor. Her wave from the back deck, smile and always telling us she was going to be gone for 2 weeks to Cape Cod will be missed, as well as giving her the veggies from our garden, she loved the hot peppers! Condolences to all, Steve and Phyllis Madraak.
