William de Malignon Obituary

de Malignon, William Edward SAN DIEGO -- William Edward de Malignon died Saturday, May 25th 2013 at the age of 81. Born November 25th, 1931, he was the son of the late Robert and Ida de Malignon, originally from Aberdeen South Dakota. Bill is survived by his two daughters, Carol Tully, Julie (Chris) Radford; his son, Thomas (Cheryl) de Malignon; grandchildren, Danyelle (Aaron) Hahn, Dana Tully, Natalie Radford, Parker Radford; and great -grandchildren, Addyson Nielsen (Dana), and Lila and Ivy Hahn. After attending Central High School in Aberdeen, So. Dakota, Bill headed to the University of Wisconsin at Madison on a Navy scholarship to pursue a BS in Mathematics attending the College of Letters and Science and graduating in 1953. In August of 1954, he married Lois Donnelly and from 1953 to 1956, Bill was in the US Navy. He toured on the USS Midway around the world, stationed in Japan and then to Washington State on the USS Lexington, ending his tour of duty in San Diego at Coronado Naval Station. He returned to UW Madison to pursue his Masters degree in Mathematics. After graduating, he left Madison for the University of South Dakota (Vermillion SD) in 1959 for his first professional teaching position. In 1960, he and his family moved back to San Diego where he assumed the position of Math Professor at San Diego State University. Two years later, he took a position teaching at University of San Diego. Bill loved his teaching career and retired in 2002 at the age of 70. While teaching at U.S.D., Bill met Ilana Mysior (Music Professor) while he volunteered his recording expertise for many music sessions. Ilana and Bill were married on November 21, 1970 and had celebrated 40 years together when Ilana passed in March of 2010. Bill's greatest loves were Ilana, music, math, traveling, keeping in touch with his family, computers and Denny's, his favorite restaurant. He and Ilana traveled extensively and loved to go on exotic cruises. Bill was born with a love of music, playing the trumpet at an early age and then the viola. He played in several chamber music groups, joined the Jewish Community Center Orchestra/Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra in the early 70's until 1990 and then joined the New City Sinfonia orchestra where he continued to play up until the week before his death. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family. Tom, Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I hope his memory gives you comfort during the upcoming weeks.

July 14, 2013

It was my pleasure and honor to know Bill, my best friend, Julie's father for over 30 years. If he was invited, he would be at any family gathering which I shared with Bill and the Radford family over the years. This is where I enjoyed his quiet unassuming demeanor but zest for life. I also appreciated his wry sense of humor that even tickled and surprised himself! I'll miss not seeing him the Radford's home for the family holidays and events...
