CLARENCE DARBY Obituary

DARBY, CLARENCE CUSTIS Clarence Custis Darby passed away in his sleep on Monday, May 27, 2012. The youngest of four children, he was born in San Diego on November 8, 1921 to Thomas and Adela Darby. "Darby'" as he was most often called, attended Grant Elementary School and graduated from San Diego High School in 1939. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Shortly after the war he met Ruth Mann, the fourth of five children from an Iowa farm family. About that time, Darby began his 38-year employment with the National Biscuit Company. When Nabisco wanted to transfer him to Riverside, CA, Darby was reluctant to go without Ruth by his side, so they married in October of 1945 and began the best years of their lives. In 1957, the couple returned to San Diego upon Darby's promotion to Sales Manager for Nabisco's San Diego and Imperial County region. Dad loved his life. He enjoyed sharing his love of family, friends, GOLF, travel, and sports with everyone he met. He thought he was a lucky guy because of the amazing life he lived. We know that we are the lucky ones because we are left with so many wonderful memories of the times we shared with him. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Darby was preceded in death by his beloved Ruth. He is survived by his son, Gordon Darby of Tucson, daughter Nancy Tagwerker (Mark) of La Mesa, and grandsons Smith Darby, Michael Tagwerker (Amy) and Scott Tagwerker. Donations may be made to the USA Olympic Committee or Rady Children's Hospital.

Dear Nancy and Gordon,
Mom sent me the news about "Darby".
I have so many wonderful memories of the times we shared together... Your dad reminded me so much of my own. I remember with great joy the Christmas Eve's we spent at the Eller's (Bali Jai and the picolo player)!!! and the wonderful treats from him that always seemed to appear. You were so lucky to have had super parents that loved you so. Cherish all the wonderful memories.

I will miss Darby dearly. He was truely one of the sweetest men I've ever known. His regular visits to the golf course to bring us girls flowers is something I will always remember fondly. I am fortunate to have one of his beautiful plumerias growing in my yard to remember him by. He was generous, kind, and lived a wonderful life. The last time I saw him at the restaurant, we enjoyed a long conversation about our families and lives and I will always treasure that memory. I'm glad he went peacefully. I couldn't ask for more.

He was quite a man! One who truly treasured his family. The pride he showed with the mention of children or grandchildren was there for all to see.

When he would go out to eat, he knew every waitress by name and they his. He usually didn't have to place an order, they already knew.

Taco night will never quite be the same!

I will miss chatting with Darby as he took his walk around the neighborhood, with his trademark ball cap sitting jauntily on his head. He always had a story and smile with him. Thank you for your service to our country. God Bless you.
