Donald Hinkle Obituary

Hinkle, Donald 05/26/1916 ~ 04/11/2015 BONITA -- America's Oldest Marine Corps Iwo Jima Survivor Day's short of his 99th Birthday, Don Hinkle went to meet his Lord and Savior last Saturday morning. A living legend from The Greatest Generation, he was born on the Plains of South Dakota. He survived the Spanish Flu in 1918 and later worked to earn his first of many classic automobiles clearing poison ivy and building bridges with the CCC during The Great Depression. He spent five years as a Cattle & Sheep rancher only to find the Dust Bowl an unforgiving adversary. His turn at corn farming met similar setbacks with wild fires and locusts. He answered his Nation's call to arms after Pearl Harbor enlisting in The Marine Corps. The country boy saw the Pacific for the first time from the Camp Pendleton training grounds in San Diego where he would earn his jump wings in the elite Para-Marines and soon after met the enemy with valor in Guadalcanal, Vela la Vela, Bougainville and Choiseul. He landed with the 3rd wave on Red Beach 2 of Iwo Jima with the newly formed 5th Division Marine Corp; He survived the entire 36 days of active combat where "uncommon valor was a common virtue." He lost his best friend Doug Ghoulson in the first hours of combat and later on liberty gave his life to Jesus at a Billy Graham Revival. He married his hometown sweetheart, La Rayne, who was a real life Rosie the Riveter in the Kaiser shipyards of Oregon. After The War, Don made one more attempt at life in South Dakota as a trucker, contractor, school custodian and lastly a Mobil Filling Station Operator before the melody of "South of The Border"* lured him back to the Imperial Beaches of California. There he found his second calling as a fireman and 22 years later retired as Assistant Fire Chief at Imperial Beach Fire Department NAS in 1977. Just as busy in retirement, he set about fixing up dilapidated rental properties, helped construct Midway Baptist Church and spent summers with family in a variety of used Class C motorhomes. His 3rd and final chapter was as "Mayor of the Manor"* in a small enclave of Old Bonita where he shared his knowledge of animal husbandry with leagues of young 4-H'ers . He danced at the 69th Iwo Jima Reunion in Camp Pendleton with his lovely bride of 72 years and took home the great honor of "Oldest Living Iwo Jima Marine in America." Don is survived by his wife LaRayne (Brown), 6 proud children Patricia and Michael Gailband, Sharon and Robert Inpyn, Don and Erin Hinkle, Theresea and Ivan Berwager, Shirley and Pat McGuire, Jauhn and Jennifer Hinkle, 11 grandchildren, 14 grandchildren and 1 great-great grand- daughter. Services and a Celebration of this Great American Hero will take place at Sweetwater Community Church, 5305 Sweetwater Road, Bonita, California this Sunday, April 19 at 2PM. Just as their dining table and hearts were open to many a foster child or hungry neighbor kid, all are welcome to come celebrate Don Hinkle with his grateful family.

Don and Erin and the whole Hinkle family. We were saddened to read about the passing "corner stone" of the Hinkle family. Don we didn't know your dad, but you can tell by a person's upbringing that you came from good stock.
Don and Erin, we kind of lost track of you over the years since you moved out of California and we moved 10 miles and had to give up our phone number we had for forty years. If time allows, give us a call. We would like to here from you.

I knew Don just casually from the IBFD & F-33 union meetings. We had some occassions working with Don as IB was closing & North Island was assuming command. As with most WW2 vets Don never spoke of his sacrifices in war. He provided safety to our military crews & airman at IB. He had 2 honorable careers he was a true HERO. My sympathies to his family & loved ones.

Our sincerest condolences to LaRayne and the entire Hinkle family in their loss of a very loved and admired husband, father, grandfather - and great-grandfather. I personally treasure all the wonderful memories I have of growing up with the Hinkle's and being welcomed as one of the family. Both Mr. & Mrs. Hinkle always set such a wonderful and loving example of what a Christian family should be. God Bless the entire family always, but especially at this time. May they always cherish the wonderful memories of their loving husband and father.

My prayers and condolences are with the entire family. I got to know Don through his son Jauhn Hinkle. I worked with Jauhn at Sweetwater High in the ASB. I remember those flag T-Shirts that were inspired by Don. Don was always there when his son, Jauhn needed his help at work. Don always was a happy man and so kind to all of the students and myself. It was a pleasure knowing Don. I know Jauhn will miss his dad very much.

I was one of those lucky neighbor kids who frequented the Hinkle home. Wonderful memories of a special man who taught the kids around him more than he ever realized. From sharing Cowboy breakfast, picking weeds in the yard for 1 cent per plant, driving us to Bible School, piano recitals, laughing and teasing as well as stern but fair correction (even us errant neighbor kids) but always welcoming and loving. I learned much from him and am grateful and proud to have known such a man. The Hinkles were there for my sister and I when we suffered personal tragedy and their strength and faith supported us when it was most needed. He inspired us to be good people and role models for our children.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of the family. With much love......

My dear Hinkle family, La Rayne, Theresea, Shirley, Pat, Sharon, Donnie, John and all the spouses and children, I am sorry for your loss but know the Lord has him in His hands. God bless you and keep you in His care. With much love,

Sasha Ybarra

I never new Mr. Hinkle, I wished I had met him. He was previously a Chief in a fire department I worked at many years after he retired. Mr. Hinkle is no doubt a Hero and a man who accomplished alot as one of our greatest generation. I felt the need to pay my respects to him and his family. Peace be with you all as you cope with your loss. God is taking care of this man and always will.
