Kathryn Ramer Obituary

Kathryn Ramer, 91, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at the home of her daughter in Fort Smith, Ark.
Mrs. Ramer was a native of Arkansas. She relocated with her husband and family from Van Buren, Ark., to Williamsburg in 1959 where she resided until 2008, when she relocated to her daughter's home in Fort Smith.
Mrs. Ramer taught high school math and science in several public schools in Arkansas and Virginia. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Delta chapter of Iota State. She retired from teaching in 1982. After retirement she enjoyed needlework, time at home and visits with her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Ramer was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Ramer, and by her son, Robert Ted Ramer. She is survived by her children, Kitty Ann Williams (Jerry) of Milton, Fla., Hilda Ross (Ron) of Fort Smith, and John David Ramer (Karen) of Fairfax; her daughter-in-law, Martha Ramer of Glasgow; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ramer ("Grandma Kat") was intelligent, unpretentious, generous, kind and loving. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her family.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, in Williamsburg Memorial Park. The Rev. Jerry W. Williams will conduct the service.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Delta chapter of Iota State Delta Kappa Gamma Society or to a charity of your choice.
Bucktrout Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

The news of Mrs. Ramer's death did not reach me until today when I shared last night's dream that included Mrs. Ramer. Although it has been more than 50 years since I experienced her teaching, it is not unusual for me to think of her with appreciation. My husband also quotes her at times, and both of us credit her with spurring us to think critically. Her son Ted and daughter Kitty were in high school in Van Buren with us, and they were wonderful persons also. Angie Evans Benham (Rogers, AR)

Mrs. Ramer was my Chemistry teacher at Bruton High School. She was a wonderful lady with a great sense of humor. I appreciate her dedication to education and her students.

I signed the book once already but I wanted the family to know what an influence Mrs. Ramer was to me. The following is from my Memoir which I wrote a year or so ago. "When I got in the 11th grade, I took Chemistry from Mrs. Katherine Ramer, my first mentor. Her son Ted was my best friend, but he did not possess my passion for chemistry. Sometime that fall of 1958, I learned that Mrs. Ramer was staying late each day to conduct an inventory of chemicals in the lab. I volunteered to help her. That led me to staying late each afternoon and helping her with the inventory and setting up experiments. I loved it!. I knew then that I was going to become a chemist rather than an electrical engineer." I am now retired as a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry from Christian Brothers University of Memphis.

With bowed heads and moist eyes we bid her farewell.

Mrs. Ramer was my teacher at Van Buren High School. I graduated in 1960.
I knew her son Ted, and her daughter Ann. We attended the First Presbyterian Church in Van Buren. She was a great teacher, and a great influence in my life.
