Dale Hines Obituary

Dale Arlo Hines
HARLINGEN, TX.-
Dale Arlo Hines, of Harlingen, Texas, died on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 8:30 am. He was 82.
He is survived by his wife, Diane, his daughter, Judy Billings, and his son Steven Hines (Carol), as well as five grandchildren-Lauren Shaw (Jim), Katie Vale (Chris), Jacob Hines, Kendra Billings, Daniel Billings-and two great grandchildren, Travis and Lena Shaw.
Dale was born in 1929 in Flint, Michigan. At age 3, his dad died, and he moved with his mom to the family farm in Ludington, Michigan. After attending North Park University in Chicago, Dale graduated with a B.A. from Michigan State in Lansing, and then went on to earn his M.Div. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago.
While at Trinity Seminary, in December of 1953, Dale met and married Bernice Jane Mills, of Whipholt, Minnesota. Before finishing seminary in 1955, Dale was the organizing pastor of a new Evangelical Free Church in Wauconda, Illinois. Dale also joined the Air Force Reserve as a Chaplain during that time. In 1959 he went active duty.
As an Air Force Chaplain, Dale lived with his family in Kansas, Texas, England, Florida, Indiana, Japan and Arizona. He was also in Vietnam in 1969.
A few years after his wife Bernie died in 1980, Dale retired from the Air Force. He met and married Diane Stanley Richards in 1986. He was the founding pastor of Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church in Bandera, Texas, before retiring again in 1993. Dale and Diane lived in their motor home full time for a few years before settling in Harlingen for quilting, square dancing, and good friends. He was an active member of Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church.
Dale had many gifts and talents: laughter, delighting small children, outdoor grilling, and preaching. His sermons for kids and adults were short, personal, and thought provoking. He read continually. His commitment to family, work, and faith are passed on to the next generations. Well done, Dale.
A memorial service will be held at Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church in Harlingen at 4:00 on Sunday, October 30.
There will be a grave side service at Fort Sam Houston on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 11:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, you may make donations to the Memorial Fund at Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church in Harlingen. Donations in his name may also be sent to the American Cancer Society.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Henry Thomae Funeral Home.

Diane and Family,
We were shocked to see Dale passed away...we're so sorry you all have to go through this loss and sadness. Can't imagine D without D. Our thoughts are of all the long, good chats we had over coffee and goodies and smile when we think of how we rushed to get out of the square dance hall so we could get to Denny's for their "Grand Slam" special before they stopped serving it for the day...Not sure we ever accomplished having done that, but always found something else on the menu we consumed! Will never forget the two of you coming into dance lessons announcing you had bought a "Bounder" and were going to sell your house in San Antonio and find another home for your cat. We liked you both a lot, but wondered what the heck a "Bounder" was and questioned whether you had lost your minds. We soon discovered from your adventures it was a wonderful lifestyle which we became addicted to when you invited us to visit you at Sunshine for a few days where we bought a park model and continue to winter there. You and Dale moved up to the "East Side" and, sadly, we lost touch over the years. We love you still and talk of times with you often. Dale was a delightful conversationalist and it was always such a joy when you got the coffee pot going and we solved what problems of the world we could from your kitchen island bar. Please know we are thinking of all of you and Dale will always be a part of all of us. - Bill and Bonnie Stover (Dayton OH and Harlingen TX)
