Col. Lynn W. Wiegand, 80, of Fairfield, PA, passed away July 12, 2011, in the York Hospital, PA following complications from heart surgery.
Lynn was born August 11, 1930, in Santa Rosa, TX the son of the late Lorence and Ora (Gaertner) Wiegand. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1947 and was drafted into the Army in Dec. 1950. He completed Officer Candidate School and became a commissioned officer in January 1952. He was immediately deployed to Korea, the Unites States, then to Germany 1956-1960. In the 1960's he served in the U. S., Turkey, and Vietnam. In the 1970's he served as commander at some U. S. installations and in the Pentagon.
As he rose in rank, he attended the Signal Officer Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College. He also earned an undergraduate degree from Univ. of Nebraska, Omaha in 1966 and a Master of Business Administration from Ship-pensburg State College, PA, in 1971. His awards include Legion of Merit Air Medal, Joint Service Com-mendation Medal, Meritori-ous Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oakleaf Clusters and the Armed Forces Honor Medal
He married Mary Bess (Maynard) Wiegand, May 19, 1956, she passed away in 1998.
He is survived by step-daughter Georgia Borcher, two grandchildren, several grandchildren, his best friend, Maysie Deardorff of Fairfield, two sisters, Twila Wallace, of Dallas, TX, Lela Mae Wiegand, of Santa Rosa, TX, and by one brother, Craig Wiegand and his wife Marguerite, of Weslaco, TX.
He was predeceased by one brother, Roe Wiegand, and two sisters, Verdelle Wiegand and Lois Crofford (John).
Lynn and Mary moved to Fairfield, PA, in 1980. He faithfully cared for her in her later years, and was an excellent neighbor, garde-ner, cook, snow remover, and an informal consultant/counselor on tax and financial matters. He was a member of the Gettysburg United Methodist Church in Gettysburg, an active volunteer for the Fairfield Community Fire Company, and a valued worker on Pippinfest.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Gettysburg United Methodist Church, 30 W. High St., Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Jay Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be 11:00 AM, Friday, in the Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. Family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Monahan Funeral Home, 27 E.
