Pat Russell Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on May 18, 2013.
Pat Russell October 27, 1934 - May 15, 2013 RUSSELL, Pat (Patricia)

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Eilleen Patricia (Law) Russell on May 15, 2013 at the age of 78.

Her passing not only came unexpectedly, but a mere six days after the loss of her husband Ken, with whom she was married for 58 years. Sadly, Pat was diagnosed with leukemia only one day after losing him.

Incredibly adored and survived by daughter Cathy (Robert), sons Brian (Julia) and Dan (Paula), grandchildren Scott (Lisa), Tracy (Shaun), Palita, Anna, and Benjamin, along with her younger sister Colleen and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father (Frank) and mother (Bridie), who brought her into the world on October 27, 1934.

Though born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Pat spent her early childhood raised in Calgary. As a young girl she excelled in piano, dance and even acting - where she appeared/starred in two films. This is where she learned to ride horses for a movie scene in Banff.

Then in her early-teens, her family moved to Vancouver where she attended high school at Burnaby South, Kitsilano and McGee. Pat then began her career at the Royal Bank, retiring in 1992, after nearly 40 years of service.

After marrying Ken in 1955, the Russell family moved to Richmond in 1960. Pat was the "heart and soul" of the family, cheerfully and loyally supporting her children and grandchildren in their various endeavors.

When she wasn't watching over her husband and children with unselfish devotion, Pat enjoyed music, attending musical theatre, bowling and playing bingo, bridge and even pitch & putt golf. (Her guilty pleasure? Watching her favorite soap opera!)

She also loved her family travels, with fond memories of Hawaii, Mexico, Fiji, Ireland, New York, Alaska, and Nevada.

In her later years she especially treasured her social time with the South Arm Community Centre's Seniors group.

But mostly Pat loved her family and friends - and she will be greatly missed by all of them.

Adored for her kindness, her grace and her dignity, most were likely unaware how bravely she took on numerous medical challenges.

The family would again like to extend special appreciation to the Doctors, Nurses, Staff and volunteers at RGH Palliative Care.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation and/or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Friends and family are invited to attend a joint "celebration of life" for Pat and Ken; 1 pm, May 28 at the Quilchena Golf Club at 3551 Granville Avenue in Richmond.

It is so sad to be sending our sympathies to the Russell family again. I am deeply saddened that my Auntie Pat is gone. I will miss you Auntie Pat. I remember as a little girl my auntie Pat always gave me books for gifts and that is what gave me the inspiration to read. Thanks Auntie Pat. Our sympathies go out to Brian, Cathy, and Dan and their families.

Cathy, Brian and Dan,
Hearing of the loss of your mom and dad has left me very heavy hearted. I have great memories of your parents, Pat looking out for you guys and all your friends and always welcoming us with open arms no matter what shenanigans we were up to and Ken always making me laugh. I leave your house laughing as Kens humor and the banter amongst you was always so entertaining. Your parents were always so active in sports as coach and supportive fans. I wish all of your family the strength and love to help each other through this loss and you are all in my thoughts and prayers.
