John PAINTER Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Dec. 31, 2016.
PAINTER, John Edward
Son of June and Ned Painter and long time resident from Campbell River died peacefully on Christmas day. John was one of the last surviving people born on the Tyee Spit at the mouth of the Campbell River Estuary in Campbell River, BC. John loved animals, cultivating his roses, fishing, and spending much of his time on the ocean and rivers throughout BC. He lived his early life by following his passions working as a fishing guide at Painter's Lodge and as a commercial fisherman. John and his boat crew were instrumental in the drilling and blasting of Ripple Rock in Seymour Narrows that was a marine hazard and was described by Captain George Vancouver as "one of the vilest stretches of water in the world." John's second career found him on the waterways of BC again on tugboats and as a Dredge hand from Kitimat to Tsawwassen where he was involved in the building of the ferry terminal. He will be sorely missed! He was predeceased by the love of his life, Margaret Painter. He is survived by his daughters Barbara Woodside and Marilyn Rogers; his grandchildren Melissa Jean Woodside, Alicia Woodside, Carly Rogers, and Marla Andrag; his brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Eileen Painter; his sister Beth Hughes; 12 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Memorial gifts may be made to the Mid Vancouver Island Salmon Habitat Enhancement Society, PO Box 935 Parksville, BC V9P 2G9. No funeral by request.

Grampa, you are an inspiration to me for being the special character that you always were. You were able to have fun right up to the last years I've known you-- going for local pub-crawls, going out on the town to be social, taking us for a spin in the car well into your 80's. One time about 8 years ago, dad and I came to visit you in Campbell River, and in order to find you we ended up walking from pub to pub... I think we went to four. Most said you had been 'just' there!

I will never forget the feeling of walking around Campbell River with you, that special spring in my step from knowing that I was with one of Campbell River's fishing pioneers, and most beloved characters. Thank you for showing me how much fun you can have in your 80's, I am looking forward to it.

May you fish forever in heaven...

Love your granddaughter, Alicia
