I have very good memories of David's sense of humour and common sense. Thanks to your family, we had the 2 best cats ever for almost 20 years, on West 13th! He was one of the few members of the French dept that no-one ever said anything bad about, he was so kind. Our condolences to the family, I'm sure he will be sorely missed.

David: You were one of the first members of the "Department of Romance Studies" that I met when I joined it in 1966. What a long time ago! You and Alistair MacKay and Harold Knutson made me welcome although you all taught French and I taught Spanish. Much friendship, albeit no romance. Later, Niederauers and Coopes found ourselves close neighbours, you on Blanca and we Coopes on Bellevue Drive around the corner. You and Bev were always so welcoming it was a pleasure to have you so close. You may not have realized it, but it was at your instigation that we bought our first computer. I still think of you whenever I go past your house.'
Bev: my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. You and David always seemed to me to be so close. It was always a pleasure to be in your company.

I am so sad to hear about David's passing. He was such a lovely colleague and mentor for me, sharing his knowledge with humility and humour and all my memories of him are filled with warmth and caring. It was indeed a privilege to have known him. My thoughts are with his family.

David lives on in my memory as a refreshingly positive and helpful colleague, a dedicated and devoted teacher-scholar, and a steadfast friend. To his family, I extend my condolences and heartfelt sympathy.
