David Niederauer Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Aug. 2, 2014.
David J. Niederauer 1924 - 2014 Dr. David J. Niederauer passed away peacefully on July 27, 2014 at Hillcrest Extendicare in Calgary, Alberta. He was born in California on September 6, 1924, and is predeceased by his parents, Phil and Ruby, his brothers Phil and Franz, and his son John Claude. He is survived by his wife Beverly, children Paul, Ruth and Joan, and grandchildren Katlyn, Andrea and Dana. David joined the U.S. Army in WW II, and after serving, attended San Jose State where he met and married Beverly (Lusardi). Bev and Dave then spent two years in Paris where David began his long career centered on French literature. David pursued a career in teaching, and taught for several years at UC Berkeley, then moved his family to Vancouver to accept a position at UBC. He taught there until his retirement. Along the way, David won two Canada Council awards to research on French literary figures, and in 1968, took his family on a year-long sabbatical to Paris. He later acquired his Doctorate, and is credited with several books and literary publications on French poets and writers. David was also a keen tennis player, and enjoyed playing with his friends at the Dunbar Community Centre. David will be remembered by his geniality, charm and wit, and ability to tell a great story. CBC radio was his soundtrack of choice, and guests of Bev and Dave were always offered a Manhattan. Often sharing a joke or clever observation, David enjoyed people and laughter and will be missed by all. Thank you to the nurses and doctors at Foothills Hospital and Hillcrest Extendicare in Calgary who cared for David in his final year.

I have very good memories of David's sense of humour and common sense. Thanks to your family, we had the 2 best cats ever for almost 20 years, on West 13th! He was one of the few members of the French dept that no-one ever said anything bad about, he was so kind. Our condolences to the family, I'm sure he will be sorely missed.

David: You were one of the first members of the "Department of Romance Studies" that I met when I joined it in 1966. What a long time ago! You and Alistair MacKay and Harold Knutson made me welcome although you all taught French and I taught Spanish. Much friendship, albeit no romance. Later, Niederauers and Coopes found ourselves close neighbours, you on Blanca and we Coopes on Bellevue Drive around the corner. You and Bev were always so welcoming it was a pleasure to have you so close. You may not have realized it, but it was at your instigation that we bought our first computer. I still think of you whenever I go past your house.'

Bev: my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. You and David always seemed to me to be so close. It was always a pleasure to be in your company.

I am so sad to hear about David's passing. He was such a lovely colleague and mentor for me, sharing his knowledge with humility and humour and all my memories of him are filled with warmth and caring. It was indeed a privilege to have known him. My thoughts are with his family.

David lives on in my memory as a refreshingly positive and helpful colleague, a dedicated and devoted teacher-scholar, and a steadfast friend. To his family, I extend my condolences and heartfelt sympathy.
