Edward AULD Obituary

AULD Edward George Born April 27, 1936 in Chilliwack. Died peacefully at home in Vancouver, November 22, 2009. Survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Vanessa (Harry), sons James, Christopher (Mona) and Graeme, grandchildren Kieran and Elise. Ed joined the Department of Physics, UBC in 1966 and retired in 2001. He lead the magnet design team during the commissioning of the accelerator at Triumf; conducting research there and abroad throughout his career. During his 18 years as Head of Engineering Physics he continued to teach undergraduate courses while also serving as a faculty member with the University Industry Liaison Office promoting the commercialization of university research. In the community he served on the SPARK Committee, Bates Uranium Commission, BC Science Council and volunteered in the Scientist in the Schools Program throughout BC. He was respected and admired by all and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues as well as the many who came to know him after his retirement when golf, bridge, woodworking and Elections Canada became new passions. A celebration of his life will be held at Dunbar Heights United Church, 3524 W 24th Ave, Vancouver, BC at 1:30 PM on 18 December, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army, Vancouver Food Bank, or The Edward George Auld Prize in Engineering Physics, Attn Rhonda Roth, Development Office, Awards, 500-5950 University Blvd, Vancouver, V6T 1Z3.
