Mahmoud MANZALAOUI Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jan. 28 to Feb. 1, 2015.

MANZALAOUI, Mahmoud Ali
1924 - 2015
After a brief illness, Mahmoud passed away peacefully in St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, on January 21, 2015. Scholar, teacher, and friend to generations of students in Egypt, England, and at the University of British Columbia, he was renowned for his conviviality, good humour, and generosity. Born in London, England, he graduated from the University of Cairo in 1944 with a degree in English literature. Thereafter he studied at Oxford University where in 1954 he finished his D.Phil. His academic supervisors included C.S. Lewis and J.A.W. Bennett. While his interests were wide-ranging, much of his scholarship concerned the connections between Arabic and English literature. He published anthologies of Arabic short stories and drama, as well as Secretum Secretorum: Nine English Versions, which appeared in 1977 as a volume in the Early English Text Society series. Those UBC students who took his courses on Chaucer and other medieval topics will remember him for his lively classroom readings and informative lectures. He worked hard to impress upon all of his students the importance of literature and its relation to life. In Egypt, Mahmoud is survived by nephew Tarek Yehia, nieces Laila, Camelia, and Ulfet Yehia, grandnephew Sameh Shaheen, and a large extended family. In Vancouver, he is survived by Dr. Aziz Nazif and Joan, Harriet Kirkley, and numerous friends, colleagues, and former students who will never forget him. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 2, at St. Mark's Parish Church (UBC campus), 5935 lona Drive, Vancouver, BC, followed by a reception at 11:45 a.m. at the UBC Golf Club. A Burial Ceremony will take place that day at 2:15 p.m. at the Gardens of Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery, 15800 - 32 Avenue, Surrey, BC. All are welcome.

I'll never forget his lively readings in English class. I also used to see him regularly at St. Marks. I have never seen an equal to him in university. He was a fascinating and inspiring professor. I've always wondered what happened to him, and I just received the first newsletter from the UBC English department, and there he is. RIP

Thanks for being a most memorable professor of Chaucer for me, and bringing alive his writings with your wonderful readings and explanations of the text! Thanks for being an inspiration and a kind hearted human being, who I did see often at St. Mark's over the years. God rest your soul in peace forever, good Dr. Manzalaoui!

Mahmoud was a good friend of Westminster Abbey and would come for one or two retreats each year. We will miss him. Requiescat in pace...

Mahmoud lived across the street from us, in a modest little white house. He had asked me to come over and help him replace a curtain that had come dislodged one afternoon. About 3 hours later, my wife tapped on the door, worried about us only to find us deep in discussions with an open bottle of 'something sweet' and she sat down and we had a lovely afternoon... He will be sorely missed.

Ross Labrie and I spent a lovely couple of hours with Dr. Manzalaoui in December---we chatted much about his time with C.S. Lewis----some magical and heartfelt moments.

Dr. Manzalaoui's class on Chaucer was life changing, opening up a way of seeing literature whose vitality sustains. Ave et atque vale.

Professor, I have known you for many years. You left us quickly and peacefully. Your mind was always a wonderful gift as a listener. We sat many times for several hours and your stories and knowledge will last me a lifetime. Rest in Peace. Joanne and Christina

Mahmoud was a lovely man and an extraordinary gentleman (in both senses of that word). I am proud to have been his colleague in UBC's English Department.
