Margaret Hewett Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun on Apr. 1, 2006.

HEWETT _ Margaret (nee Smith), born in London, England April 7, 1923, died in Vancouver, March 26, 2006. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, the Rev. Phillip Hewett; son, Peter Barton Hewett; daughter, Daphne Elizabeth Sweeney (Ed); grandchildren Liam, Isabelle, Natalie and Emily. A teacher and pre-school educator, she was much involved in the work of the Unitarian Church and in causes promoting peace and disarmament, receiving an award for outstanding service from the International Association for Religious Freedom. Margaret had a deep interest in music and served on the board of the Vancouver Chamber Choir. In her earlier years she was a strong contralto singer and also a vigorous hiker. For the past 25 years she struggled courageously with the increasing ravages of rheumatoid arthritis, with the invaluable help of live-in caregivers Jane, Merlyn, Berna and Julieta, and latterly of the compassionate staff at the Arbutus Care Centre. There will be a memorial service in the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, 949 West 49th Avenue, on Saturday, April 8 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Society, 895 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver.

I am sending my condolences to you Phillip all the way from Kenya. I know that you and Margaret had some wonderful adventures in many parts of the world amd maybe even here. I wish you the joy of remembering those times together. Sincerely,

Margaret’s welcoming smile at the Vancouver Unitarian Church when I attended there made me feel so very welcome, particularly as a newcomer. I recall a particular Christmas Candlelight ceremony when she read a prose piece. Her voice was so lovely. It was perfectly read. Margaret's tenacity in the face of the condition that ravaged her body these many, many years was amazing. My heartfelt condolences to Phillip, Peter, Emily and family.
