Peter Rolston Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province from Nov. 8 to Nov. 9, 2006.

ROLSTON _ PETER CARSON 1937-2006 Born on August 15, 1937, Peter Rolston died on November 3, 2006 at home in the loving care of his family after a brief and valiant struggle with a very aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Eldest son of Bob and Amy Rolston, grandson of Walter and Floss Carson, and of Fred and Tilly Jean Rolston, he will be remembered with love by his wife Louise, son Mark (Charleen) and daughter Karen (Parker) and grandchildren Kayla, Alex, Joelie, Madeleine and Quincy Anne, and by his siblings David (Barbara) of Montreal, Barry (Dale) of Victoria, Bob (Evie) of Pender Harbour, and Katie of Robert's Creek. After completing his undergraduate work at UBC, he studied for ministry in the United Church of Canada at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax and was ordained in 1965. He served the church in Tahsis/Gold River/Zeballos, St. Andrew's in Mission, Mt. Paul in Kamloops, St. John's Strawberry Hill in North Delta and Northwood in Surrey. Peter had the privilege also of serving as the MLA for Dewdney from 1972-75. Peter loved downhill and cross country skiing, boating, fishing, windsurfing, snorkeling, exploring, traveling, listening to and playing jazz, and working on building and renovation projects. He is best remembered for his openness, his outgoing good nature, his energy, passion, and enthusiasm, his ability to build bridges between people, and to create opportunities for others to live more fully. HIs understanding of God, as seen through the life of Jesus, encouraged him to celebrate creation and to work for justice and peace. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Northwood United Church, 8855 156th Street, Surrey V3R 4K9 on November 11, at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are invited to consider a gift to Northwood United for Ministry with Youth and Young Adults, or to the ministry of First United Church in the downtown eastside. "In life, in death, in life beyond death, we are not alone. Thanks be to God."

From the moment that i met Peter at a confirmation retreat he had my utmost respect. He truly was a man of God. My prayers are with his family. May God bring each of you peace and understanding in such a difficult time.

I'll always remember Peter as kind, hospitable and welcoming person. Although I only knew Peter for a short time it was meaningful. When I first came to the Surrey area as a minister only a year ago Peter went out of his way to make me feel welcome and invite me to go skiing. He offered his support in getting settled in my new ministry.

I'm so glad to have known Peter even a little.
It was a pleasure to see him at the last
WVH Reunion with his lovely wife.
He struck me as a very elegant and noble man
with a wonderful sense of humour.
I can only imagine how Peter will be missed
by his family.
My deep felt condolences to them all.

Peter was the minister at Mission when I was in my early teens. I recall how committed he was to strengthening faith in young people -- he encouraged me (and others) to become involved in parish life, including performing folk songs (Bob Dylan!) for Sunday congregations, and I always felt he respected young people, as well as the adults in the congregation. My sympathies to his family and friends, and prayers for them.
