Viola Wyse Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Aug. 20, 2009.

WYSE Viola Chief of Snuneymuxw First Nation, Nanaimo, BC, passed away suddenly on August 17, 2009. Viola Wyse (Vi) was born on August 29, 1947 in Campbell River, B.C. She is predeceased by her parents Dorothy and Francis Drake; first husband Alfred Wyse 1976; and son Joe in 1989. She is survived by husband Joseph James Wyse of 30 years, children Roz Smith, Mike Wyse, Brad Wyse, John Wyse, Leslee Wyse, Bill Wyse and Kate Good, 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She is lovingly remembered by the community, her large extended family, many friends, and her staff. Chief Viola Wyse made history by becoming the first female chief of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. She was a visionary leader who accomplished great improvements and raised the standard of living for her community. Her knowledge and experience gained from her work with Department of Indian Affairs for 20 years, and band administrator for Snuneymuxw First Nation and Stz'uminus First Nation, gave her the necessary insights to move forward through a bureaucratic system that more often than not impedes First Nations communities. Her political wisdom led to a number of protocol agreements with local governments important for service agreements and harmonization for future economic development discussions. She was a strong supporter of education and training, good governance, and a progressive administration. She has left a great void but a remarkable legacy that will continue to benefit her people for decades to come. Prayers will be held at Beban Park Centre, 2300 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, BC, Thursday evening, August 20th, 2009 at 7:00pm. Funeral Mass on Friday, August 21, 2009 at 9:00am at Beban Park Centre, 2300 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, BC. Burial to follow at the Snuneymuxw IR No. 1 cemetery. Donations may be made to Vancouver Island University to a bursary in Chief Viola Wyse's name.

I remember when Viola first gone to my parents to ask if she can have there daughter Sandra do some work for her, that daughter was me, Saundra aka Sandy Bob. I done housework and knitting for her.
She treated me like I was a close family member, I really enjoyed working for her and just been with her. I remember of spending nights just so she can get that last sweater finished, cause the sweater buyer was going to be there the following day.
I remember of the girl talks we use to have. She always made me feel right at home whenever I was around her. I remember the meals she would prepare for me before we get started on our knitting, and remembering the nice smell in the home of that home cooked meal. There are so many memories I have of my friend Viola and I will miss her dearly. It was a great pleasure of knowing Viola.
