Robert DICKSON Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Dec. 7, 2013.
DICKSON, Robert Irvine
May 23, 1941 – December 5, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Robert "Bob" Dickson on December 5, 2013. We celebrate the extraordinary life of our devoted husband, kind and generous father and grandfather, accomplished physician, and dedicated member of our community. Bob was born in Morris, Manitoba to Edythe and Jack Dickson. He earned his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1964. Bob completed his ENT residency in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he met and fell in love with his beloved wife Susan. Together they started a life in Vancouver after their marriage in August of 1969. Bob started his otolaryngology practice in 1970. He was a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at UBC. He loved his work and was an accomplished otolaryngologist who earned his membership into the Triological Society in 1980. Bob filled his non-work life with many pursuits. He loved curling with his friends, had a deep appreciation for art and was a talented artist. Bob was a committed member of Shaughnessy Heights United Church. Having grown up on a farm, Bob took great pride in his garden. He was a tremendous sports fan (Go Hawks)! Bob 's favorite place was Semiahmoo where he loved to play golf with family and friends. More than anything else Bob filled his life with his family. Bob is survived by those who brought him joy: his devoted wife and best friend Susan, his three children Pam (Chris), Matt (Caroline), and Tim (Amy), his five grandaughters Kate, Lucy, Pauline, Emma, and Keira, and his sister Marian Mazinke (Harvey) as well as many members of extended family. He will be deeply missed. Bob is remembered for his generous spirit, his willingness to go out of his way to help others, his kindness and friendship, his passion for justice and fairness and his undying devotion to his family. Everything Bob did he gave his very best effort. Thank you to the Vancouver medical community who supported Bob over the past two years. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at Shaughnessy Heights United Church on December 14 at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully appreciated for the Children's Hearing and Learning Centre of BC or the BC Cancer Agency.

Dear Susan, Psm, Matt and Tim
The world could be better with more Bob Dicksons. Our family will always be grateful at the help he gave us even though miles separated us. Fond memories of the time in Vancouver when I was wined , dined and stayed wth you while in Vancouver and the kindness you both showed to sister Kathryn. I always knew when Bob visited Kathryn as as she wound tell me she had a box of Purdy's chocolates (from Bob) and tangerine oranges from Susie. I offer you our sincere condolences.

Dear Susan, Pam, Matt and Tim

So terribly sorry for your loss. Bob was such a genuinely wonderful man and I will always feel a great indebtedness to him. If it was not for Bob and his association with such wonderful experts within the medical community, I would not likely be here to have the privilege of signing this memoriam today. Godspeed Robert Dickson. You made an everlasting impression on my life and no doubt all others that had the honour of your care and friendship.

These past few days have been filled with many memories of cousin Bob. During our childhoods, we spent many days of fun and adventure at his farm and our lake cottage. Our paths crossed less often as adults, but always when we did connect I found him to be such good and interesting company. Bob was a special cousin with a wonderful sense of family and he felt very blessed with his family. I feel very grateful that I was able to visit with him a few days before he died. Saturday , a service will be held to celebrate his life, one that was so well lived. Susie, Pam, Matt and Tim may God bless you and may the love of family and friends comfort you in your grief.

In loving sympathy from Cousin Susan

Bob and I spent many summers together as kids on Uncle Jack and Edith's farm. I have very fond memories of the many things that he and I experienced together. Bob was very adventurous and with Uncle Jack and Aunt Edith's encouragement we learned how to swim in the pond, eat from the garden, and go hunting with our 22's at the age 10! Bob also introduced me to golf, an affliction I have had ever since. I think we even took up oil painting at the same time, a hobby that we both enjoyed for many years. The memories of Cousin Bob and his family will live with me forever. Bob continued to give to people for the remainder of his life. Thanks Bob.
With loving memories from your Cousin Keith.
