Takuo UEGAKI Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Dec. 17, 2013.
UEGAKI, Takuo
January 21, 1939 - December 10, 2013
Takuo passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and support of family. He was born in Motomiya-cho, Fukushima but grew up in Ayabe, Kyoto, the fourth of seven children. After graduating from Tottori University with a forestry degree, he immigrated to Vancouver, BC in 1967. He and his new bride, Motoko, spent the first few years of their life in Canada in Quesnel, before moving back to Vancouver where he worked tirelessly to build a successful landscaping business. An avid outdoorsman, kendo practitioner and sensei, he loved nothing better than a good book, a good dog, a great joke and a delicious meal shared with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Motoko; daughters Chieri (Paul), Kimi (Sander), Maki (Andrew); and granddaughter Aiko. He is also survived by his siblings, Wakako, Koji, Masato, Kazuo and Shohei. Predeceased by parents Tamotsu and Ayako, and brother Takeshi. He will be dearly missed by all of his extended family, in Canada and Japan, and the many friends and students he met during his very full life. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Burnaby Hospital and St. Michael's Centre Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion during his last months. A memorial service will be held at the Vancouver Buddhist Temple on Sunday, December 22 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers and koden, please consider a donation in his memory to Burnaby Hospital, St. Michael's Centre Hospice, or to the charity of your choice.

He was my teacher - he taught me to be grateful - to receive the opponent as I would give. He gave more to his students than people realize. The world lost a very great and kind man. I will never forget him. I regret not knowing of his death in my busy adult years. Thank you for everything ??.
