FRIZELL, Charles George
October 3, 1921 – September 29, 2014
Charles "Chip" died peacefully in bed at The Irene Thomas Hospice in Delta with his wife Margaret Leo Frizell by his side. He is survived by wife, Margaret; sons, Michael (Debra), Paul (Barbara), and Mark (Tracy); five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Charles was first and foremost a family man, who was deeply loved by us all and who deeply loved us. He will be greatly missed. He was born in London, England within earshot of the Bowbells. At the age of 17 years, he joined The Royal Airforce and served as a fighter Pilot in WWII, including in the Battle of Britain. He immigrated to Canada after the war, where he met Margaret. He taught at Vancouver's St. Georges School with that school's founders at its inception. He continued teaching in the Vancouver Public School System at Windermere High and Prince of Wales. Before retiring, he served as President of the V.S.T.A. In retirement, Charles stayed active with family and friends. He also loved poetry, mathematics, building, oil painting and writing. He was a devout Catholic. Service to be held, Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 3900 Arthur Drive, Delta, B.C. Donations to Delta's Irene Thomas Hospice in lieu of flowers and cards.

I remember Charles (Mr. Frizell)very well.He was my Guidance Councellor @ Windermere in my later years there in Gr. 11,and 12.I remember him looking at the courses I had chosen to take,(In about 1972.)and not being pleased with my opting for Foods 11,(Or maybe it was 12?)because he thought it to be a waste of time. But Foods was fun,and I've done a lot of cooking since then.

Mr. Frizell was an outstanding teacher at Windermere Secondary his dedication to me during my "off the rails" years during high school, I have always been grateful for. A life well lived! My condolences to your family.

Mr. Frizell, as I knew him, was my Math teacher at Windermere. At the start of my Gr.8 year my mother passed away. He must have known. This kind gentleman gave me a little white kitten that I named Clancy. I had Clancy for many, many years and still remember Mr. Frizell for the kind person he was to me. My condolences to the Frizell family. P. Hayes

Sometime during Chip's early tenure at St George's School, he and "Chiefy" were invited by my parents to attend a summer week-end party at Hermit Island. I was far too young at the time, but there were stories from my Mum, in later years, telling of her association with the Frizells.

Jump to 1980. My landlord then, was a close friend of Charles, and I had the privilege of beginning a friendship with him and his family.

When they lived on Oak Street, near Langara, I occasionally dropped in, usually unannounced, and sometimes if the time was right, shared a meal and visited Paul and Barb next door. The move to Tsawwassen put the kibosh on such visits, but we were largely in touch by phone, and when Chip finally got an e-mail address, frequent exchanges ensued ~ usually ribald jokes, and responses to, what he described as "my contrarian screeds". His "letters to the editor" were copied and put in the post... because Chip's only connection to the Internet was at the library. I just couldn't convince him to get hooked up at home. Consequently, the trip to the library was an almost daily affair, and his preferred method of "exercise".

A cherished twenty-four-year friendship comes to a close. Almost ninety-three years of life and wisdom will be missed. I will forever rejoice in my memory ... and love of him. My thoughts and condolences go to "Chiefy", Michael, Paul, Mark, and the Frizell clan under them, as they all start a new chapter in their lives.

I knew him only as "Mr. Frizell" when he taught at Windermere High School. As a student I didn't know about his serving as a fighter pilot or his other life journeys and events, but I did know he was a great teacher who guided and inspired. My condolences to all the family on your loss.

Dear "Chiefy", Mike, Paul and Mark, and the Frizell Clan,
Please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of your husband, father and grandfather, Charles. You may have only known him in that capacity but he was, as a young man, one of "the Few" who rose in the air in their Hurricanes and Spitfires to face the Nazi onslaught during the Battle of Britain. Undaunted by the odds, their success achieved by the narrowest of margins, allowed the Allies to have a permanent platform in Britain to wage war against Nazi Germany. If Britain had fallen, Western Civilization would have collapsed as well. Your Charles was a humble Christian man who recognized this threat and to him and other men and women of that time, we owe our freedom today.
It has been a honour to have known him over this past twenty-four years. Alas we shall never see his likes again.
With our deepest heartfelt sympathy and love at this time of great loss, Mike & Debra, Richard & Liza and all of the Parrys in Ontario.
