Michelle POCKEY Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jun. 25 to Jun. 26, 2016.
POCKEY, Michelle
A double rainbow graced the sky above Vancouver, British Columbia, on the evening of June 17, 2016, marking the hour when Michelle Pockey slipped away, surrounded by her family. This extraordinary display of colour and light was a fitting tribute to Michelle, who will be remembered by many as a tremendous and transcendent force of nature.
Michelle leaves a family who loved and cherished her, including her husband, Mike Mammone; her children, Noa and Nathan; her parents, Carole and Maurice Pockey; her brother, Barry Pockay, and his wife Petra; and her mother-in-law, Elizabeth Shewchuk. She will be dearly remembered by her friends and colleagues, whose lives she touched profoundly through her generosity, mentorship, and leadership.
Michelle, an alumna of UBC Law, was an outstanding lawyer, who, during her 20-year career, specialized in environmental law across the forestry and mining industries, principles of corporate social responsibility, and the cultivation of successful, inclusive partnerships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal businesses. A tireless advocate for the advancement of women in business, Michelle was a founder of the Professional Women's Network, an organization dedicated to women's education and business development, with over 1,200 members across Canada. She was a member of the Women Presidents' Organization and the WEB Alliance of Women's Business Networks, and the recipient of many awards, including a Business in Vancouver Influential Women in Business Award, a Champion for Change Award presented by the Women Presidents' Organization and GroYourBiz, and an International Alliance for Women World of Difference Award for extraordinary contributions to the economic empowerment of women. Michelle served as a board director for several prominent organizations, including the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which drew not only on her business acumen but also on her musical talent: an accomplished jazz vocalist, Michelle performed at many clubs and concert halls while she was building her remarkable legal career. Her voice was soulful, and listening to her sing was a powerful and moving experience.
Jewelry making was another of Michelle's many talents. Her beautiful gemstone creations expressed her artistic sensibility and her love for the recipients of her stunning gifts. Michelle's ability to make others shine was exceptional, and it transcended everything she did. Whether she was playing with her beloved children, mentoring a junior associate, helping colleagues network with one another, or hosting family and friends over a delicious, home-cooked meal, Michelle always made people feel encouraged, empowered, and cared for. Even during this past year, while battling the devastating effects of metastasized colon cancer, Michelle reached out to loved ones and supporters, inspiring courage and faith through a candid blog, in which she documented her medical trials and her indomitable spirit and sense of self.
Above all else, Michelle valued the precious time she spent with family and close friends. Her children were her greatest treasure and greatest joy, and she loved nothing more than raising them, together with Mike, their extended family, and the close-knit group of friends with whom they spent holidays and celebrated many milestones.
In recent months, Michelle often shared a favourite aphorism, encouraging us all to "be the place that love shines through." For so many, Michelle was – and always will be – that place.
A Celebration of Michelle's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Rosewood Georgia Hotel, 801 W Georgia St, Vancouver, BC.

My deepest sympathies to Michelle's family and friends. We only crossed paths briefly and I'm only learning the news now, but she was a great mentor and inspiring leader.

I met Michelle while working on a hearing in Smithers in 1999/2000. I remember that she loved good chocolate and that she was a versatile musician and showed a keen interest in our daughter's early progress on the clarinet. She gave me a CD of hers that I promptly wore out while driving from mill to mill. When I left my full time job as environmental manager for a forestry company in 2013 she suggested we might find projects that we could work on together. That would have been a dream.
Tonight my husband and I were listening to music and it was only when I searched for Michelle's album that I found this horrible news. I'm so sorry for Michelle's family and have no words to express how deeply wrong this is. Can anyone tell me if Michelle's music is available? I know every word. Glenda Waddell

I have somehow been out of touch and at Christmas realized I should really get together with Michelle....of course being the amazing, social person she was, she has historically been the one to contact me to get togetherand put a positive spin on work and coach me on work/life balance. I should have figured out earlier that something was wrong given that I had not heard from her for so long. Michelle was an awesome contemporary to have in law and in child rearing. It is very sad to accidentally learn of this through the Bencher's Bulletin-she will be missed for so so many things. An amazing person who loved her family beyond words and who did her very full life better than most I have ever met. Really sad...

Dear Carol, I have just heard of your recent loss and truly have no words that express my deepest sorrow for you and yours. It has literally been years since I have been in touch with you. We go back to Oshawa on Simcoe Street.
I just had to send my deepest condolences to you and yours as I knew Michelle before she moved to the West. She was as beautiful, elegant and posed as she is in the pictures posted. I truly have no words that can begin to heal your broken heart. Over the years I have thought of you often and wondered how Michelle and Barry were as young confident adults. To hear of your loss brings great sorrow to me. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you. Fondly Ruth Martin xo

It was an honour to know and work with Michelle. In dealing with my own personal challenges right now and I have quite literally drawn strength and encouragement from the unbelievable positive energy that Michelle exuded. In addition, Michelle's wonderful lessons about making and keeping connections--I will take with me going forward for the rest of my life. If you don't build connections and bridges--you can be left very much alone. It is a wonderful legacy from Michelle for all of us. Despite these gifts, she will be terribly missed.

I met Michelle during the formative years of the Professional Women's Network. Although I wish I could say we were friends, I only know her from attending the PWN functions, one of her jazz nights and buying her precious jewelry. When we see each other rarely at the PWN functions, she greats me as if we were great friends. She is the most gracious, talented and intelligent person I have encountered in my life. When I last saw her at the BIV Influential Women in Business Awards ceremony, she was vivacious, happy and gave the most unforgettable acceptance speech. I will surely miss you, Michelle. I can see you smiling from heaven.
Cheers, Michelle!
